Did anybody watch it last night?

Was there anything of note? or was it just a re-hash of the parade if silicone-injected, bare-midriffed, bling-bling wearin' Jesus-thankin', cavalcade of "stars" that it's been of late?? . . .

I meant to check it out, but NUTHIN' gets me away from "Carnivale" on HBO on Sunday nights . . . .

I know you're not a Melissa E. fan, but she did an extremely passionate Janis Joplin tribute with Joss Stone (another amazing singer) that was, to me, the highlight of the night. Melissa performed bald (dealing with the whole breast cancer thing ya know), and her performance was on fire and filled with heart...her courage is amazing. I give her a lot of credit.

There was a cover of "Across the Universe" done to be put up on itunes as a benefit for Tsunami relief. Stevie Wonder, Bono, Nora Jones, what's his name from Green Day, and others sang with Velvet Revolver (Slash and the GNR remains) as the backup band. For the most part, it was less than stellar, with most of the singers off key. Could've been bad monitors, but a great idea.

Ray Charles won a lot of awards.

This year seemed to focus more on performances and less on acceptance speeches. I thought it was one of the better award shows of recent years.

I really liked Usher's song and dance with James Brown coming out. JB is still fantastic and he has to be at least in his 70's.

Melissa was definately a highlight. Lots of courage to show up bald. See earned a lot of respect last night.

I wouldn't have minded seeing Melissa, but Joss Stone annoys me to no end . . . . guess it's best that I missed it.

They were supposed to do some kinda' tribute to Scott Muni . . . did that happen?? . . .

Joss Stone annoys you to no end? Bummer for you, bro. The girl recorded her first album at 14 (released last year) with a bunch of old time R&B and soul musicians from the 60's and 70's and Angie Stone (no relation) singing back up. Frankly, I find it to be more soulful and authentic than most of the eletronica R&B crap put out in the last 10-15 years. On top of the fact that the girl has an incredibly mature sounding voice and style for someone even twice her age-besides the fact that she does not sound white. Joss also commands a stage with style and passion in every peformance I've seen...and REALLY sings (as opposed to all the other pop chicks her age). Now that she's 16, has her second album out (that she co-wrote)and still can't drive yet...she's got quite a career going.

Too bad her talent doesn't do it for you. As far as talent goes, I think she has more credibility and feel in her music than many musicians...and she still has time to "mature"...

She tries too hard.

She's got a VERY good voice!
But sometimes the best singers are the ones who know when NOT to sing . . .

Someone had given me an advance copy of the CD, and all of the "ah's", "ooo's", "oh, yeah's", "oh, baby's" that she over-peppers all of the songs with, made me not wanna listen anymore.

As they say, . . to each his own . . . .

I think the music was an improvement over last year. Less rap I suppose and the urban music wasn't in your face nasty. My wife said they played "white boy music this year." I suppose that bon mot popped out some time between green day and the lynrd skynrd tribute.

I liked Melissa Etheridge's performance, and understand what's going, but gosh sakes, she looked like a bald matador.

Cliff-I hear you. As a matter of fact, I think she needs to mix things up with a bit more variety, and perhaps, yes, a lot less "peppering"...still, I think she is an amazing talent and very unique, considering the current musical climate...and especially considering her age. She still has room and time to grow. I really wouldn't mind starting out at 14 with her ability. IMHO there's a lot of potential for really great things from her.

Just struck me as odd that someone would consider her annoying.

Oh and Zeppelin got REALLY lame recognition last night. Seemed like a pitiful few seconds. Jimmy and John were there, and got to stand and wave for 2 of those 3 seconds.

I have to side with Cliff on this one. Bought the CD based on all the great things I had heard and, frankly, it put me to sleep. She does have a great voice tho.

I much prefer Nina Storey

Well, I don't know....seems to me you were challenging everyone to a guitar playoff a few weeks ago.....even offering to take on several members at a time. This might be another one of your subtle attacks!

If it was me would that be considered shameless self promotion?

Stephen;

Believe me, most (if not ALL) of everyone here could wipe the floor with me when it come to guitar playing. If anything, I'm a singer who just holds a guitar (for protection from flying projectiles/produce) . . . .

. . . and nobobody shamelessly self-promotes more than I.

Cliffster, I saw Joss Stone on Austin City Limits. I listened for two and one-half songs. I couldn't take any more. I'll take Diana Krall over Joss Stone any day.
