I've been thinking about buying a resonator guitar. These are the two that I've been looking at.

Anybody have any input about either of these manufacturers?

I've had one of the j tursers. Made in Chiner somewhere, entry level garbage. I kept it a week. Should be $200-250. OK to start on but if you like this style guitar you're going to soon want to move on to something better.

National has a sweet Resolectric, but I think it's about a grand.

Are you dry out there Bruce?

all the cheap/medium priced off-brand reso guitars are pretty much the same. I.E Mediocre at best. Johnson seem to have improved their cones considerably lately, but feel, playability & general vibe on all of them is usually pretty clunky. If you find a cheap reso that appeals to you the best thing you can do is invest $60 in a Quarterman or National cone to replace the VW hubcaps the factories use (check the Stewmac website for replacement cones) You'll immediately notice a significant improvement in volume, tone & dynamic range.

I sell Luther Tatums excellent Bigheart slides in the UK and Luther graciously invited my entourage to his yearly NAMM show jam at his house. While I was there Luther pulled out a handmade cutaway aluminum resonator guitar and said "try this" It looked a little crude but had a quarteman cone AND a way cool vintage 50's Mercury hubcap as a coverplate. It sounded and played absolutey incredible. It was made by a guy called Larry Pogreba. His guitars are owned & played by Lindley, Cooder, Sonny Landreth, Bonnie Raiit, Martin Simpson. Gotta have one.

Basically I just want something to mess around with.

Also I suspect that both of these come from the same factory.

There was a review of a low price resonator guitar in one of the Guitar Player magazines a few months ago that said it had the best quality resonators available. I believe it was a Regal but I could be wrong. Both of the guitars you have referenced are NOT traditional resonator guitars and would not be satisfactory if you bought them. The resonator technology has had many years to mature, and it is best to stick with the traditional design.

The current issue of AcousticGuitar has a pic and a small blurb about the Pogreba "hubcap" reso. Looks WayCool . . .
