The FRG threads have been great reading. I think we can put this to bed if we just all agree to start calling them what they are - SECONDS.

Every guitar company has them. The lower your QC standards are, the fewer seconds you seem to make. You can call them blems, FRGs, B grade, seconds, whatever ...

If you don't want to buy a second, then DON'T.
If somebody sold you a second and didn't inform you up front, then he screwed you and you should take the guitar back and get your money back. Or at least re-imburse you the delta between a first and a second.

Dave,
You're absolutely right. A dealer should always disclose whther it's a 2nd, frg whatever. any dealer with scruples would do that. It's just a good business practice and it's honest. If you operate your business with integrity. This sort of problem would never occur.
if you want a deal.. and want to buy a 2nd, frg then buy it and save some money.
if you don't want one then don't!
I couldn't have said it better..So I'm glad you did.

Total agreement. I started a lot of this, I wasn't trying to troll. My dealer, whom I trust implicitly, pointed out the removal of stickers might become a problem in the future. I'm sure the FRGs are great, I just wouldn't be happy if I was the type of individual that wanted factory "firsts" and got an FRG. I wonder how hard it would be for Kaman to have a way to punch in your serial number and find out? They have to keep the records for warranty reasons.

Yes well said Standing O..that FRG topic got way out of context! Seems like seconds got twisted with warranty issues, care and feeding issues and that guitars remain perfect forever.
Ovation should clearly mark if a guitar is a reject and has been repaired as such. But, I do think that if a guitar has been repaired to perfect quality, why should it be marked a second if it is rebuilt back to perfectly new condition. Unless there is some other reason like it was previously register as sold and replaced to the customer or if it is not in perfect condition with visible imperfections. If it's to move stock..? that's a whole other ballgame IMO.

I just received an FRG 1868LX-5 that I bought from Victor Litz listed on ebay (with a 24 hour return option). I got it primarily because it was an 1868LX and only a very few 1868s were made - I love the unique things, I guess. Anyway, it is a beautiful instrument. I have gone over it as thoroughly as I am capable of and as near as I can tell, it is perfect. I don't care why it was run through the line a second time, it is lovely and plays like a million bux, plugged and unplugged.

I guess I agree with sixfingers. If Ovation catches a defect and makes it right, they should sell them as firsts and give them the full warranty. If they choose to sell real blems or seconds unrepaired (and degrade the Ovation name in the process), then they should be indellibly marked as such (i.e. stamp it into the back of the headstock) and be done with it.

As far as my FRG 1868LX is concerned, I guess that I'm rolling the dice regarding if I'll ever need the lifetime warranty. I do have five years - hopefully all the real defects will raise their ugly heads before that. My consolation is that the I have never had to send an O back to the mothership for anything that was Ovation's fault ... and $760 for a stunning 1868LX was way too tempting to pass up! ;)

That is a rare guitar in the states. Ovation isn't selling the super shallow bowl LX's in the U.S.

Robbie,
You scored! Great Price, great guitar.

Which would all of you prefer - an out of the box FRG or a been-hanging-in-guitar-center full price model?

Al - you still have me down for that FRG #47 Reissue, right?

Second has a somewhat negative conotation. So does frig.
I think the way to solve this is from this point forward to call them wonanahalfs.
Anytakers?

On a slightly twisted angle... Think about all the people that buy the Celebrity models not knowing they are not Made In The USA, thinking they are. Now I realize this isn't the same, but it sure happens. That label on the inside gets overlooked often.

Sometimes those fall off when the store people polish them so they'll look good on the rack.
