Joined: February 2005 Posts: 35 Location: chattanooga tn | got the op24 installed in my ae48, its amazing how much acoustic volume and bass responce was lost in lenghtening the preamp slot, just barely over an inch, didnt think much about it at first, as I had the rear cover off and the preamp cavity empty, sounds a thousand times better plugged in though, right now I'm running it through a 60 watt marshall jtm all tube, and from the tone and volume I'm getting, I really dont see much of a need for a dedicated acoustic amp at the moment, kinda bummed about the acoustic sound, but I spose the electric balances it out, thanks for all the advice, and I'll keep you posted if I decide to go through with the epulaute ectomy | ||

Joined: August 2003 Posts: 4619 Location: SoCal | When I was repairing the 1669 (ended up being a bad saddle), I took the pre-amp out...there was an acoustic difference. Wonder if you could improve by improvising a baffle with foil. After all, the box has straight angles. | ||

I had been planning to have electronics installed while it's there. Now you got me guessing about the effect on the acoustic sound. | ||

Joined: February 2005 Posts: 35 Location: chattanooga tn | there was no preamp per say in the guitar before, it was passive, voulume and tone slider,now I have this big box nestled against the inside of the guitar, in retrospect I dont think the cutting did much to alter the sound, though I'm sure it did to a degree, but I think the preamp housing has deadend the sound considerably, and it makes sense as it cant vibrate as freely,it still sounds good unplugged, not as good or as lively as before,amplified its a thousand times better,and unless I'm just noodling around the house or having an aneibrated jam on the street corner, I'm going to be playing plugged in, so I cant complain.....too much ![]() | ||

Joined: February 2005 Posts: 35 Location: chattanooga tn | I installed it myself, if you have it done by folks who know what they are doing, might yeild better results,I think I did a decent job,but I know little about these guitars....I routed the side of a seagull a few years ago for a preamp, didnt really notice much change in sound at all, so I dunno, kinda thinking about getting longer screws and making some kind of stand off, cant be much, as the contols would be sunk in as well, just enough so the box doesnt fit right against the body, though it probably wouldnt be worth the effort | ||

Joined: March 2002 Posts: 15682 Location: SoCal | Brad: Regarding putting a p/u in your old Balladeer, you might consider a straigh thru preamp with no controls on the body. These are used in the oversears markets and were put in the Folklore Deluxe (FD-14). That way there's no big box inside your guitar. | ||

As far as Acoustic Volume goes, Wasn't it said in an earlier post a while back that part of that is perception and not always reality when it comes to Multi Soundhole Models. seems like i remember it being stated that since the sound travels forward and you're sitting behind the guitar you are not always hearing what the people in front of the guitar hear. Was I wrong?? Did I dream That Post up? | ||

Joined: February 2005 Posts: 35 Location: chattanooga tn | I secured the battery box to the underside of the preamp housing with electrical tape, I didnt want to make any more holes in it, I've got it positioned where you can just reach in through the rear hatch and pop it out, it definately sounds different, even my roomate noticed,and my playing is just background noise to him | ||
