Attended the International Blues Challenge in Memphis a few weeks ago. About 130 Blues acts, in a town that's all about the Da Blues. I think I'll pass. I've been listening to Hip Hop and DeathMetal to get some balance back in my system. However, everyone should spend a weekend some nite on Beale Street.

In reality I jest. I learned so much about Blues and it's many many many styles in 4 days. Of course visiting "Sun Studio" was like visiting Mecca for a recording engineer.

Thanks!
We don't get much blues on the radio in this part of the country.

I was in Nashville for a meeting a few weeks ago, and after that drove to Memphis and had to do some Blues Traveling.

Went to the Rum Boogie Cafe on Beale Street for a great night of blues and barbeque, the next day visited Sun Studios, this is where Elvis and many other blues and rock pioneers first recorded. Very emotional experience.

Then drove down blues Highway 61 along the Mississippi Delta into Clarksdale, went to the "Crossroads".........got down on my knees......, then the Delta Blues Museum, then down Highway 49 into Greenwood and went to the Robert Johnson gravesite markers. There are 3 and found 2. All this while listening to the complete Robert Johnson in the car.

It was one of the greatest trips of my life and one that I always wanted to do, to visit those towns and feel the vibe of being there, where most of the great country bluesmen are from, grew up, played and lived.

This is where the roots of blues, country, rock and most other American styles were born.
A trip that anyone that loves music should make at least once in life.
I know I will go back soon.

Love the earlier blues with some of the founders like Howlin Wolf...........got a 100 plus CD collection from BMG that has write ups and pics. of the early blues!

My goal is to go to Memphis, TN to see BB's place and eat some great ribs while listening to some great blues and jazz! :)

Steve,
Can you pick-up signals from Charlotte? WNCW has a transmitter in Charlotte at 100.3 (on yo radio dial) I can pick-up the one in Spindale (88.7) and I keep it on in my shop all the time! Great station.....not like all the other crap on the airwaves.

No Charlotte signals clearly here. Once ina blue moon 104.7 comes in but that's about it.

For hardcore blues give a listen to R.L. Burnside. "Ass Pocket of Whiskey" is an album as grungy as delta mud. An amazing blues album.

Warning: Not for the Squimish

Memphis is me hometown, and I'm glad that people who aren't from there seem to have a better time visiting than I ever did living there! Seriously, my best memory of Rum Boogie is waking up the next day with food poisoning from their chicken fingers!
