I recently picked-up an Ovation Bass (yesterday)and quickly found your website. The bass looks like a Magnum I (stereo) but the neckplate does not have a serial number - just blank, also the graphite rod does not run through the head, it stops around the nut. The bass has had a repair to the headstock where it looks like it was fractured at one time (probably fell from a stand) and I could see why Ovation would design a rod running through the headstock- otherwise it looks exactly like the one on EBAY now. I don't have access to post a picture, but will post it soon. Also, the cavity between the two pickups was painted black, it doesn't apear original but there is no lacquer beneath it. Sorry for the long post, I realize that half of the fun is the quest to learn about your instrument, but would like some info before I get started restoring it.
Any clues on a replacement pickguard? Thanks for your time?

Chris

COS(Chris),
Welcome!! Miles(Mr. Ovation) One of the moderators of this site would have tons of info on this bass. he might even have some ideas about restoration and how to bring it back to life.
You'll find his email on the welcome page of the site. Give it a try. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

A blank neck plate and the grafite stopping at the nut would indicate a very early bass. The painting between the pickups was from a previous owner. Nice bass.

Hi,

I have some additional info:
The pots are from 1976, all the nobs are volume knobs (vol), and it looks like there might have been a differnent pick guard on it at one time.

Would there be a serial number somewhere?

thanks,

Chris

Under the neck plate? in a body cavity somewhere? Probably not there but worth a look anyway. It sounds like a real early one.

Hi Cos,

You're lucky to own this great Bass!!
Today, i've received a nice Magnum Owner's Manual from 1978.
If you don't have it, you can find scans at this place:
Magnum Bass Owner\'s Manual

I hope this manual can help you.

Jérôme
