I am now the proud owner of this beautiful Ovation LX 12-string. I posted about this last week, and completed the deal earlier in the week.

I have yet to fully explore this guitar, but my initial impressions are positive. It has the lush sound of a 12 string, but is not overly bright. Nice volume and projection. The neck is arrow straight, and the action out of the box is good, but I will be tweaking it a little at some point.

I really like the amber-burst finish. When I posted last week, some commented on it being "butt ugly". To my eyes, it is a very nice color, and has a vintage look to it.

In terms of some recent posts about guitars as art, I see this as functional art that I hope to enjoy for years to come.

I would post pictures, but I am not a digital camera guy. Sorry.

Nice get Jim.
I don't think the color is ugly. Different, but not ugly.
The couple I have tried did play well.
Let us know how you feel about it in a few days.

Well, I have had this LX 12-string for about 3-4 weeks. It is really a nice guitar. I have re-strung with Elixir light nano's, and like the tone with these strings. I also have a set of D'addario's ready to go. The original strings were really shot. I have removed one of the two shims (the thicker one), and the action is perfect. Strings almost parallel to the fret board from nut to saddle! I really like that type of set up. I am impressed with the ease of adjustability of these Ovations. I can easily fret all the chords I need to play, and the guitar sits very nicely on my legs when sitting to play. I am not sure how much I would like to play this standing, however. The neck should be stable over time, and I see no evidence of a "hump" at the 14th fret.

All in all, a great 12-string. The color (amber burst) is a little different, and I enjoy that.

I wound up returning my 1777 LX 6 string. That one just did not do it for me.

Great report Jim!

I have been looking but I can't seem to get my hands on any LX 12s as of yet. Overall they sound promising.

The new neck system should loan itself to a very flat and close action. Top color is a weird thing to pin down. Call them as you see them.

Pictures would be nice!

MWoody,

Other than this model I have (made for Guitar Center), I have yet to see an LX 12-string. What is the deal with that??? I think the "LX Upgrade" is something Ovation would be pushing, but see no evidence of this. Perhaps resources at the factory are not available? Is more effort going to develop the newer deep bowl? In any event, I am happy with what I have.

I think it is due to a Good News/Bad News issue:

The Good News is that the Factory is in fact still manned by Luthiers and is not a Cookie Cutter assembly line.

The bad News is that we will have to wait for the limited numbers to reach us.

I ordered what I think was one of the earlier LX's from aLeX. I didn't see them populate my local music stores until about 2 months later!

Now if you are looking for a Telecoustic - they are everywhere!!!
