Howdy. I have a 1612 Custom Balladeer that needs a case. I'm wondering which cases besides the original tan ones would fit? Be great if it doesn't weigh a ton. The part gig bag/part hardshell cases look interesting, but I suspect they won't work. (The guitar doesn't fit either of my dreadnought cases.)

Thanks,

Bee

I have a 1619 Custom Legend that fits well into a dreadnought gig bag. I bought the bag off of eBay. It is nicely padded, very light and has back-pack straps. This is it:

Thanks!

Cliff, any idea which Tribal Planet bag would fit?
Looks like they make several.

Mitchrx, mmm, tweed!! That just might work. I'm liking the price.

Master Templeman could probably offer better insight than I. He's a TP distributor, and the only experience that I have with them is seeing his first-hand at last year's TourJam . . . .

My son's got 2 - one for his classical and one for his Strat-a-like. Excellent bags - but I don't suppose the name of my local dealer is much use to you. Highly recommended.

Who is Master Templeman?

Mitchrx, does the bag you posted have feet?

I looked around on Ebay a bit and found a Rockbag that looks nice and has feet. However, since some gig bags are smaller than others, I'll probably go with the voice of experience with actually fitting an Ovation deep bowl into it successfully. ;~)

Our own Paul Templeman.
A member who is a also a distributor (in the UK).
Directed you to him as he would probably know which bag'd fit your needs . . . but he MAY be able to also have one drop-shipped to you should you decide to purchase . . .

M'kay, thanks.

I found an online store just across the big hill from me that has Tribal Planet bags. They seem to be about the same size and price as a hardshell case, though. $79 plus shipping.

Cheap they ain't.
But imho, you'd be hard-pressed to find a bag that offers equal or better protection for d'money.

The bag doesn't have feet. It does have a large loop near the top of the neck for hanging it on a wall. I only use it for taking the guitar out of the house because I keep all my guitars on wall hangers. Ovation guitars are very durable and IMHO a padded gig bag is all that you need for normal use and travel. For the money, this one is nicely made with a heavy tweed material outside, smooth nylon inside, thick padding in the middle, durable twin pull zipper, binding on the seams, etc. My son has used it to go to his guitar lessions by bicycle. The back-pack straps are a great feature. For $37 delivered, it's hard to beat.

I just checked online to see what the Tribal Planet bag looks like. Regardless of whether a deep bowl Ovation would fit, I'd get a Ovation hard case before one of those bags. The rigid foam pockets look somewhat bulky. Also, if you are going to keep you guitar in it all the time when you're not playing it, the simplicity of a four latch hard case seems better than a gig bag that costs about the same but has to be zipped and strapped opened and closed.
Just some more of my $.02.

Thank you both.

The Tribal Planet bags look very well made, but I think for that amount of money (or a little more), I'd probably prefer a hardshell case.

There are basically two reasons I'm thinking gig bag (maybe) instead of hardshell. One is weight. The other is space. No, not the final frontier. I'm out of space in my house. You can get more creative with storing a lightweight gig bag than a monstrous case. So, I'm thinking gig bag for now, hardshell later when I've sold some of the stuff I don't remember having.

I won't be keeping the guitar in it. It sits on a stand ready to play. But if I wanted to take it for a little ride to the city or something, I'd want more than a seatbelt to protect it. ;~)
