Hi - My first post! Nice to see an Ovation club in existence...Wanted to find out if anyone has ever seen an Ovation fitted with RMC pickup/similiar, used to drive Roland guitar synths? I believe Al DiMeola has done this with his....I am considering making the leap with my Custom Legend, but would like to hear experiences first. One guitar synth site even suggested that there used to be an Ovation model specifically made for this purpose, but I have not found any info since.

I believe it was the GTM6. Discontinued, not listed on the Ovation site, and I've found it pretty hard to find info for.

Hi,

The models R868 Elite and R869 Custom Legend have this specification.

You can find some information on in this catalog:

Thanks, Jerome! You always have the hard-to-find info at hand!

Tim, you could always ask Ovation customer service if they still retrofit guitars with GK-2a pickups. I believe they used to.
Or you could mount it yourself.
Or you could buy a Godin Variac.
I have a feeling one of those options might be more expensive than the others, though...

Thanks to all - Not as crazy with the GK-2a pickups (from what I have tried, both retrofitted and surface-mounted). I agree with you on Godin, and if I had the money, would probably go in that direction.

I will check with customer service, though! Thanks again...

Yeah, a little slow with getting on board! No, my father passed away in 2000, after about 10 years of retirement. But he had nothing but great things to say about working for Kaman. I enjoyed my stint as a summer sander, as well. A good summer job - at least I got to hang around guitars all day!

And now you get to hang out in Georgia. I asked because I heard the name Porterfield the other day in reference to a Kaman golf tournament. It's not the most common of names so it stuck in mind. Sorry about your Dad.

Tim, My Ovation Elite 1778T is equipped with the Roland GK-2A Divided Pickup and is plugged into my Roland VGA-7 Amplifier. The bracket does not fit the Ovation but you can do away with it and just use the velcro to adhere the control of the pickup to the top of the guitar. I used the double stick tape to install the pickup near the bridge. (measure carefully for perfect intonation) I haven't had a problem with the control of the pickup moving but I have posted the question as to whether or not ot would damage the top to install the pickup permanently by using the two screws. I haven't really found an answer to that yet so I continue to keep the tape. Its very sturdy and hasn't come off yet. One problem I ran into was closing the case. I took a light hammer and tapped the area of the lid where the pickup control is when you shut the case and made a perfect sized indention so I could close it. It looks great, you cant tell! It CAN be done and the finished product will rock your socks OFF! I'd have it NO other way. Good luck!!!

Thanks! That sounds very encouraging - I have an 86 Custom Legend deep bowl, currently being re-fretted. Maple Street Guitars actually has a GK-2A pickup there, so I may be able to have them test it for me before purchasing...How do you like the VGA-7, by the way?

Strange;
If that tape ends up eventually failing on you, and you want to continue with that approach, look into a 3M product called VHB (VeryHighBond) Tape. This stuff is specifically formulated to adhere two non-porous surfaces together. Once they're stuck together, they do NOT let go!! If you've ever gone through O'Hare Airport in Chicago, there's an area where there are these huge mirror tiles affixed to the ceiling . . . this tape is what's holding 'em up . . .

With all due respects, there's a slight difference. Your job is to ensure that things are "Idiot-Proof".

The people who are the "end handlers" of my work's main purpose in life are to break, bend, dent, scratch, soil, chip, nick, twist, mangle, and/or otherwise destroy (and if all else fails . . LOSE) whatever has been provided to them to construct . . . on OVERTIME ("straight time" - $75/hr) at the the absolute "Eleventh and OneHalf Hour" when there is absolutely NO chance in Hell of a contingency . . . . and when personally witnessed and confronted . . . DENY vehemently and file a grievance . . . (and/or an OnTheJob Injury) . . . .

Thank you, Cliff, for the info on that tape! I will look into it because I have to send my Elite back to the manufacturer to check out my unusual fret wear and I'll have to remove the pickup for the trip.
To Tim about the VGA-7, I LOVE this amplifier and am impressed with it every time I plug in. I'm always finding something new and it's very inspiring. It has every effect I could ever want at my fingertips. It's extremely versatile and models any amp or guitar I can think of. The only thing that doesn't sound realistic is the nylon sting guitar patches. Even the banjo sounds good though it's funny to hear that coming out of the Ovation. LoL. Also, you cannot plug in an extension cabinet but I din't think I'll ever need to. I use it in a home studio and in a few get togethers with friends that have a garage band. At 130 watts, it produces a solid, powerful sound with distortion free clarity. Here's a link so you can get some insight about the potential of the amp. http://www.americanmusical.com/item--i-ROL-VGA7.html
