I live in Canada and want to buy a new ovation. The local stores have ridiculous prices and if I order online, I have to pay 15% to the Canadian government at the customs. Anyone has a trick to bypass the tax fee?

Nope, be honest and pay the taxes. You are still saving on the cost of the guitar.

Well it is not about being honest. You see what the Canadian government is doing is actually called theft. They steal my money by calling it a TAX. Before 2004 it was all good to go but not any more.

Give to Ceasar what belongs to Ceasar. Or move away from Ceasar. Or vote Ceasar out of office.

Geka - I've ordered several guitars and had them shipped cross border. At the end of the day - you gotta pay...

Still - its much cheaper and if you are the creative type - the tax can be an income tax deduction!

Ship it to a friend somewhere in New York State or Vermont. Go down for the weekend. Leave box etc at friend's, have him keep it until your sure you want the guitar. Play the guitar for the weekend, bring it across the border. It's your personal guitar. Besides the Canadians, as far as I can tell, don't give a darn about things or people coming into canada. And no, you can't send it to me. You must have thought of this already.
PS Did you check out the prices at Steve's? Last weekend I tried the 2005 collectors they had and was not impressed with how they set it up. Next door to steve's is Jacks, they had tabaco burst celebrity, used, that was well set up and sounded great, he quoted me about 300 loonies but I'm sure you could knock him down.

Hello,
Don't mess with customs.
I live in Canada and have an older 1976? Classic Balladeer that I've been thinking of selling for over a year. No tax. haha.

If you bought it in Montreal, the price would be higher than if purchased in the US, and you'd still have to pay GST & PST... Order it online, get it for substantially less and pay the GST & PST when it lands... You still save $$$ bigtime.

and besides... last time I checked, it's illegal to defraud customs with a false declaration...

So in a few words... Don't do it...

Another way would be to ship to a friend in the US, then have him reship it to you as a gift. Of course, send up the documentation, hang tags etc in another mailing. When I've sent things to Japan, Singapore and Brunei, they didn't pay a duty, 'cause it was a gift. Better double check with Canadian customs on duty/taxes on gifts.

Thanks to all of you!

I decided to ship the guitar the "honest" way and pay the duty on it.
We have a saying in Russia; "a cheap person always pays twice"
Basically id ecided to pay the extra 300$ but at least I know for sure the guitar will not be seized. My new 6756LX should arrive tomorrow morning. Can't wait. I wanted this guitar since it came out.

Thanks to AlPep who put up with the cc problems I had. (he knows)

Congrats on the new Guitar, and for doing it right... remember the true test of a persons honor is based on what they do when no one is watching...

Enjoy the LX - I love mine!

Cheers

Mike

What a beautiful guitar I got!

The 6756LX is just amazing, thanks to those who made this guitar (I am sure they come here once in a while) and to all of those who made it possible.
