Location: Arlington, Tx | Hey folks, I've been lurking here periodically for a few years and love the site. I usually was searching for some history about my solid body Viper. Its a cream beauty exactly like number 62 in the Barron Audio collection except mine has the chrome bridge. I picked it up about 20 years ago for about $200 in a pawn shop. Now I finally need some help. Just recently the pickup pole piece on the bridge pickup came loose. You can push it back in but it sucks its way back out after a few minutes. I've secured it temporarily with a piece of scotch tape and it still works but I want to get it fixed. The question is HOW? Can I just have the pickup potted? Was it potted to begin with? Please give me your advice. I'd like to keep the guitar original. |

How about a picture of the perpetrating pole piece? The Viper pups are potted. Unfortunately with an epoxy I believe. It sounds to me like the Pup needs to be rewound and have any damage repaired as well. Replacement might be the only solution.
Hopefully someone smarter will jump in and give a more informed answer. |

Put a drop of super-glue in the hole then put the pole piece in. |

I love my Viper that I bought new in the 70's, but have never had a problem such as you describe. Many experts here to help you, some who were involved with building that model.
Welcome, and don't be afraid to ask any questions, people here are always happy to give answers.

Location: Arlington, Tx | Thanks for the inputs. I had thought of the drop of superglue route but was a little leary.
Here's a link to my yahoo album.

There's a couple of pictures of the pickup pole sticking up. You can see the remains of the piece of tape I'm currently holding it down with. I'll probably have my guitar tech look at it tonight.
Thanks for the comments. |
