Depends on what you like. I assume you're talking acoustic sound only? The mid depth bowl has a very even sound. It's good. The contour bowl, like the deep bowl, has a, well, deeper sound with more ressonance (sp?) to it. Both are good. Both have the Ovation distinctiveness, but both are different......

I've lost track of the 4-digit model number "logic", but I think models with the Countour bowl start with a "2"

Paul, was there ever any real "logic" in the numbering system? I think they used scrabble pieces and a dice cup, or maybe a dart board covered with a bingo card, especially in the Adamas line. :D

I have a 1778LX Mid bowl and a 2077LX Countour Bowl. Tone wise, I prefer the Midbowl bothe Acoustically and Plugged in.

I guess it once again comes down to personal taste and what sound you desire in a guitar. I prefer the deep tones of the deep or contour bowl when I am playing with others using higher pitched instruments.(It really womps on the Taylors :) The medium bowl sounds great also, especially when you are the only guitar player in the band. My favorite medium bowl guitar was my Custom Legend. Regardless of waht you choose, you'll never go wrong if it's made by Ovation

For a long time, up until the mid-80's maybe, the 4-digit numbering system was pretty logical, and once you knew how it worked it made sense. But it was originaly supposed to designate a relatively small number of models, and as the range expanded over the years what logic there was seems to have been lost.

I have both mids and contours. If you've primarily been an electric player, I think you'll like the contour bowl better ... it sets up flatter against you when you play whereas the mid can tend to roll a bit on some folks. To be honest, from a sound perspective, I think there are a lot of other factors that influence the sound more than the bowl, i.e. top wood, bracing, neck, and of course the mojo that's been put into it.

Personally I perfer the sound and feel of the mid-bowl better.

Deep no cut has the fullest sound.
4 deep no cut
2 Mid bowls
1 Super Shallow

I had a deep contour hated the way it felt against
my body. Just gave it to my nefew as indefinate loan. Sound was OK but I thought all the other bodies sounded better to my ear.
Its only Ovation I had that I did not love.

Alot of folks have found the Contour Bowl hard to adjust to using... Myself included.
If you are used to roundbacks, and tilting the guitar up towards your face, the contour is unusual.
Now that I have three of them, I have become accustomed to using them, and it has changed the way that I hold all my Ovations.
If you are used to a solid body, I would say Mid-Depth, just cuz it is smaller and you can tilt it if you choose to do so.

But you really need to try a couple for yourself.

When considering an A/E, if you lean to the A, stick with a fuller body. If you lean to the E side, like me, you probably wouldn't be disappointed with a shallow bowl. Coming from a solid body, the super shallow bowls (SSBs) are the thinnest and most "solid" handling of the bunch (IMHO), but typically lighter.
