I was wondering how y'all are miking the tops of your Ovations for live work. Last night I attended a jam session with my Matrix (which has no electronics) and kept running into feedback problems when I tried to mic near the sound hole area. After EQ-ing the mic channel, and ridding myself of the feedback, I was still left with a tubby, bassy tone that seriously hurt the top end. I found the best spot BEHIND the sound hole - between the sound hole and bridge - but the mic was still aimed at the back part of the hole. That was the most feedback-free, tonally balanced position, although it was very awkward for the picking hand.

I'm interested in anyone else's experiences. Do tell, do tell!

wow that sounded like a pain.
Mine has pretty wimpy electronics. I'm waiting on a potentiameter to see if that helps. In the meantime, I'm using A Seymour Duncan Maverick performer soundhole pickup (only available at GC) which records what I hear pretty faithfully. I'm playing through a Crate CA15 amp and love the sound. No feedback.

I've had the best results with the mic aimed at the end of the fretboard, or where the fretboard meets the soundhole, angled in from the headstock end rather than perpendicular to the soundhole.
This way I pick up the tone of the top, some strumming/string sound, and the bottom end from the hole without being in the direct path of the soundwaves coming out of the hole.

Now for recording purposes, I've had good luck with my 34 Martin by aiming the mic at about the 14th or 15th fret, with the mic tilted slightly towards the sound hole, although I did get a lot of string squeaks that way. For some reason that just didn't seem to work on the two Ovations. I got much more volume and tone from the sound hole, but way too woofy. By accident, I found the most natural tone coming from behind the hole, towards the bridge, yet closer to the sound hole. Of course YMMV, which is why I'm asking y'all. Just comparing notes.
