Location: SE Michigan | The buyer of my 2005 Collectors model is having a problem with the electronics. He writes:
"I put a new battery in and there is still a problem. After pluging the guitar into an amp, the red light glows briefly to indicate that the battery is good. The only way I can get amplification is to press the tuning button. After a minute the amplifified sound goes off. This is supposed to happen when you press the tuning button but as I said, it's the only way I can get amplification. Could not find anything in the manual about that either."
Anyone had this problem or have any ideas?
Thanks |

Location: Keller, TX | Is he using the XLR output? If so, he isn't getting phantom power to the unit. He either needs to plug a blank cord into the 1/4 inch hole OR connect pin 1 of the XLR cord to the metal case of the cord.
FYI, phantom power runs the preamp by power from the amp. You have to get a special cable or make one yourself as above. This allows the preamp to run without using the battery. The other way to power the preamp is by using the 1/4 inch plug. When you use the 1/4 plug, the battery is powering the preamp.
When you hit the "tune" button, this will temporarily power the preamp, so you can get sound through an "unconnected" XLR cable. But when the tuner shuts itself off, the preamp goes dead.
Easy fix is to take apart the XLR cable housing where it goes into the guitar (not the amp). Then sauder (sp?) pin one to the case. This will allow phantom power (power from the amp) to run the preamp.
If he is using the 1/4 inch plug, dunno. |

Location: Keller, TX | Sure, hope it works. If he doesn't want to fix his XLR cable, the other thing he can do is cut a plug off the end of a 1/4 inch cable and put it in the hole. Even tho this isn't connected to anything, it will power the preamp from the battery and he can use the XLR cable for better sound.
OR, instead of destroying a cable, you can get a blank 1/4 inch plug at Radio Shack. |

Location: closely held secret | Brian, he could go to RS or GC and ask for a "Pin 1 to shell" XLR cable. If they don't know what he's talking about they should be fired anyway.
Point your buyer here, we'll help him solve his problem! (or at least distract him while you run) |

Location: Waurika OK | I had a similar problem with my Elite T, which has only the 1/4 inch jack. I bought a mini mixer, it had a hum, the owners manual said to use TRS cables. I bought a couple and they did minimize the hum and worked fine on all my guitars except the T. When I used a trs cable with the T, the only time I could get a signal out to the amp was when the tuner was engaged. Not sure why this happens, so I just use a regular cable from guitar to mixer. |
