Nothing against lawyers and financial brokers who don't work for me, but the ones who have (note the past and soon to be past tense) seem to think that my money is theres to tie up for as long as they possibly can.
Thank goodness for the decent folks in the world, and all the guitar nuts here too. :p
No really, this fanclub has kept my sanity together more then you all will ever know.
Special thanks to Tony who now has me hearing the truck driving into the driveway already.
Has anyone figured out yet how many guitars is to many?????
peace, mike

And I wish this lawyer could afford as many guitars as you have.

I don't think it's a particular number that tells you whether or not you have too many. It's an attitude, a mindset that determines it.

Here's what I mean... These are just a few observations I've made along the way (about myself), and why my collection -- which totalled eighteen just a couple of months ago -- is now down to eight.

When shopping for guitars takes up more of your time than playing the ones you already have, you probably have too many guitars.

When you get a bigger adrenaline rush from seeing the UPS truck pull up in front of your house than you do from nailing that riff you've been working months to perfect, you probably have too many guitars.

When the total number in your collection is growing at an alarmingly faster rate than you are as a player, you probably have too many guitars.

Actually, this is more than just a bad parody of a Jeff Foxworthy bit. These are real issues I've recently had to confront about myself.

My collection is much smaller now, but I've discovered I like having a small collection of guitars that I really love and enjoy playing, as opposed to having a whole bunch of 'em that sit around just because one has a slightly different inlay patern than another.

Very good analysis and assessment.

I have enjoyed some different flavors but it is nice to settle back with a base of instruments.
I got to play my six this last Sunday and found I enjoyed it since I have been reloquated to playing 12s to fit in the group.

My wall has seven hangers so I should keep it at that and leave room for my Daughter's bass.

only seven...eighteen is the minimum in any room!!

add a couple of stands, then you are cruising.

As a recent "collector", I haven't found that 7 is too many or even enough. My wife would answer the question by saying I can only play one at a time. But there is a different feel and sound to each of mine and since I started collecting I went from picking up the guitar every few months to trying to play at least a few minutes a day. It took me months to relearn many of the songs I learned in my youth and weeks to learn a few more.
Last night my daughter emailed us and said she wanted a guitar for Christmas. There's a whole new opportunity to collect. I still have wallspace in the basement rec room for about a dozen more. It would be tough to play that many with any frequency.

Like I said, it's a mindset.

If your goal is to be the one with the most toys at the end of the day, that's great, if that's your thing. Or, if you've always fancied housing a personal mini-museum of Ovations (or any other guitar maker), that's cool too.

Personally, I just had to come to grips with a question that was nagging me, "What's the point of having all these guitars?" Does having a room full of guitars make me a better player? No. Does having a room full of guitars impress my family and friends? Again, no. So, what was fueling this unquenchable thirst for more and more guitars? I finally came to the conclusion that it was, for me, the living out of a childhood dream.

I'm one of several on this forum that got the inspiration to play by listening to and watching Glen Campbell as a kid. I would marvel at the array of Ovations he would parade out on any given show and think, "How cool is it to have that many guitars at your constant disposal." In my young and impressionable mind, that became THE benchmark that separated the real guitarists from the "hacks," and that mindset must've carried over into my adult life. Well, obviously, I'm not Glen Campbell. And I haven't made zillions with my music like he has, so the question was as much financial as it was philosophical.

Interestingly, I only became a GAS-aholic long after my days of regular gigging were behind me. When I was actually busy earning my keep as a player, I never owned more than three or four guitars at any time. So, perhaps the acquisition of guitars became my way of compensating for missing "the good old days." Who knows... I just knew it was time to ask myself what's really important to me.

All my life, I've believed there's only one thing that God has gifted me to do, and do really well, and that's play guitar. That's not meant to be a boastful statement. It simply means I've failed at everything else I've ever tried to do. I finally concluded that I owe it to myself, and more importantly, to the Giver of the gift, to take what I've been given and make it all that it can be. And that's where my focus is now, to take my skill as a player to the next level, and to magnify the Giver of the gift through the results.

Of course, this doesn't mean I'll never experience GAS pains again, or that I'll never buy another guitar. But, hopefully, it marks the end of my feeling the need to own so many guitars that they require their own zip code, and that I can get on with the business of improving my chops until the day comes, if it does, that I can no longer play. That's my goal, anyway...

That's just it... You don't ever "heal." You're forever a "Recovering GAS-oholic," just like any other addiction...

It's actually cured by hard sustained practice, but that's a secret ;-)
