JB,
First of all, excellant choice in bartering. "Will hammer for a Hamer." is going on my cardboard sign next time I get my rotation on the corner.

In the case of the 1112 it was the diamond vs. dot inlays. For other eras I believe it was one more "A" in the top, tuner shinyness, inlays or special tone/colors. Eventually the "Special" became Legendary.

Woody,
My 1112 has the diamond inlays but is a Custom Balladeer. I thought the Balladeer Specials are 1139 or 1639?
Then again, I may be FOS!!!

My S771 is called Balladeer Special. It has no inlay at all. I assumed Special meant special price since they aren't very expensive.

I assume the GC S771 Cedars are Specials as well.

There are several balladeer specials, I believe. The 1139 is called that on several lists. If it has a composite neck, versus a wooden one, could that be the difference? My 1139 has crack lines in the finish, always has. On the upside, the tone, and playabilty are exceptional. The old guitar would be useless to a collector, but to a picker, well, that's a different tune. Somebody said the cracks might actually enhance the sound. In the case of my old "special", I'd would have to concur with that opinion. Jeff, which "special" did you buy your electrician?

The Balladeer Special is a level below the Standard Balladeer. The "special" mean special (lower) price with some cost cutting in the manufacturing process. There are no fret markers on the fretboard. Satin finished tops instead of gloss and I've seen some that had no binding on the body. All Balladeers have A grade spruce tops regardless of whether it's a Special, Standard or Custom.

Hmmm, I don't know about all that. My Balladeer Special has fret markers on the top and on the side of the fretboard. Mother of pearl dots. It also has a high gloss finish on the top. Maybe the newer models are as you describe, however, the 1982 instrument I own, is not.

Perhaps in 1982 the Balladeer Special was different from what it is today. The Special models now have model numbers that begin with an "S" as in S771 (Balladeer) or S778 (Elite).

Please disregard my previous ramblings. Besides screwing up the terms "Custom" and "Special" I was obviously focused on merely bringing my post count up. :(

Custom means upgrade.

Special means simplified for your financial considerations or somehow non-standard.

Whatever the name, the "Special" is one of the best buys on the market -- no frizz, just great sound.
