I understand some mic cables are grounded and some aren't. I don't have anything with phantom power to check mine, so I have to go with the 1/4 dummy plug and use the battery. The XLR sounds much cleaner than the 1/4 cable.

If you have an ohm meter, you can check continuity from pin 1 to the metal casing.
