In the last two weeks I have had the wonderful opportunity to play in a.m. and p.m. Worship services. The requested sound and instrument has been my Solidbody 12 string, the post-factory Limited Deacon 12.

I haven't had this instrument out in public very often and I haven't been playing a church for a little over a year so what strikes me is this. Nearly every guitar player I run into (practice/audience) is caught spending time looking it over trying to figure it out! About half recognize or say "Ovation" but their still not sure.

Last week there was a very gifted Jazz player Steve. He played a sweet looking Blond Taylor and was wearing his "Taylor" shirt. I told him I should have worn my OFC shirt for balance. He got to spend a little "ahhhhhh" time with the 12. I counted it as an intervention.

Anybody have any "What is that?" stories they have run across while playing the most unglorified instrument out there?

Yeah, all the time. But it's not the guitar, it's my lack of talent. And it's more like, " Good god man, what the h is that!!! Please, in the name of all that's holy, STOP!!"

Pretty much every first date I've ever been on has had some variation of that theme.

Oh Miles, sorry did I veer off into sesual innuendo?? Damn, and this was supposed to be a relegious thread. Seriously, try to go ANYWHERE in the lower 48 playing a ukulele and see what you encounter. "WTF is THAT?" "You're too skinny to be from hawaii." "Who put your guitar in the dryer."

I've played an Ovation and had some jackarse say, "The company musta run out of wood, huh?"

It's just brutal being me. Dave

The 2080 usually gets the "KEWL ... what kinda guitar is that?" commentary. Usually followed by "Is there anything WOOD on that guitar?". I tell 'em "The neck, tuner buttons, sound hole trim and a teeny, tiny ply of birch in the top, ain't it great?" :D

Well, speaking of interventions; I just sold "dirt-cheap" the CC057 neck-reset project to a dear friend whose kid just reached his first month of sobriety, Told him if he was gonna "white-knuckle", he might as well be holding onto a decent guitar during his recovery. 90 songs, in 90 days. Oughta keep 'im busy!

I am totally amazed at just how many people still have never seen an Adamas guitar. Every time we play there is at least one person who will ask about it or comment on their great looks. Also had a lady who runs a small guitar store locally go gaga on me about it. I brought it in to try out some amps she had on sale, I will not go into the whole Made in China rant but I did tell her how to contact Ovation and I told her they have an import line that is quite resonable. She wants to carry the Adamas Line. More power to her ya know.

I've been asked why I only play Ovation/Adamas guitars in church, or anywhere else for that matter. My response is that Gods Word says we should to give our best to the Lord, and that could ONLY be done on an Ovation. (:

Sooo, anyone who plays a non-ovation in a church isn't giving their best effort to the lord?

OK, I know you're just kind of kidding and pumping up ovations which is cool, and as an athiest I could give a shit what happens behind the big wooden door.

The cool thing is that people are motivated to stand up in front of group of like minded people and play their guitars, ANY kind of guitars. If it's an ovation, they get bonue points. There's been some threads here over the years about why ovations seem popular with church players. Actually good reading. Combination of easy to set up for good sound, reasonably priced (leaves you more for the collection plate), not too "over the top" in terms of bling. I mean you're giving props to a guy who wore rags and sandles, do you really need a D-45 to do that?

I played a local OpenMic once and the "emcee" had a Taylor.

When I came up the guy was hooking me up with a cable and such and said (with disdain) "Oh, . . I USED to play one of "THOSE" . . . I play a Taylor now . . ."
I said "Yeh, I noticed."
He said "Nice guitar isn't it??"
I told him that I was admiring it the whole time while drinking the two beers over the course of the 25 minutes it took for him to get the thing to stay in tune after bringing it in from his car . . .

fop.

Steve with the Taylor did show where the crack was from one of those fateful "stand-and-all-falling-over" episodes.

With the money I saved I bought a decent stand...

The sound guys like the O's as well. I'm a prude, I admit it.
