Seems like these are the two subjects that get us most off track so here is a point on each.

One you got to love this use of Koa and the adamas look with only one hole. (how many holes can you expect on a uke)
http://cgi.ebay.com/BRAND-NEW-MELE-MAHOGANY-w-KOA-TOP-TENOR-UKULELE...

The second is a question on banjos. Has anyone tried a six string banjo tuned like a guitar. I tried a Deering and was not impressed but have seen old open backs on ebay every once in a while (circa 1920-30) They spark my interest but not sure that I it would really fit the music I play.

Nice looking uke.
The two hole thing makes it look like a face without a nose.

I've never heard ANY 6-string guitar-banjo sound much better than a pinch of sh*t. For starters, the bottom A and E strings are too big to work on a grooved wooden bridge that is needed for a banjo head. Secondly, these two strings set off more of a rumble than an actual note on the head of the banjo.

I have a friend that had on old 20's Gibson guitar-banjo that he put extra extra light strings on and tuned in up two frets to: F#BEAC#F#.

This worked pretty well as it got the strings to smaller gauges/higher vibrations.

A little while ago, the played the Eagles' "Journey of the Sorcerer".

GreatTune!! (and one of the few banjo songs I can tolerate).

The Mele 2-Holer is pretty nice. I owned the same design in a 6-string version with cedar top. Photos on my website. Had a nice thin profile neck. Dave

Don't jump to conclusions. Maybe HE is a banjo player, or at least maybe a BIG FAN of the banjo sound. So, him saying that Ovations sound like banjo's is actually a huge compliment ...

Ok, maybe I just see too much good in people.

This might be my favorite banjo tune. Right now, it's the only one I can think of that I like, but I like it a lot.

"sweet city woman" by the canadian group, the stampeders, is a memorable banjo tune, in my opinion.

Bluebird - Buffalo Springfield (maybe)
Billy Joel had a piece with a banjo accompniment on the album that contained Piano Man.

I always thought a 6-string banjo would be played more in the plectrum style vs 5-string finger style. Besides, I think you would probably do as well with a DSP banjo emulation for those times your meds fail and you succumb to uncontrollable urges. At least it could be a correctable problem. Just unplug the DSP and step away.

My name is ChatMan and I played a banjo for eight years. I've come here for help.

Fogelberg's "Morning Light" had some tasty banjo on it.

Bela Fleck certainly makes a banjo do some very unnatural (for a banjo) things...
