Location: Boise, Idaho | Sorry you were ignored. I like my 1862 made in 1992, but the shallow bowls lack the sound I prefer. The Elites are 2 rungs up the Ovation ladder, but don't know that I've ever played an elite special alongside the Custom Balladeer. |

Location: Hicksville, NY | What Mark said, shallow bowls lack the full sound of a full-sized guitar when played by itself. Plugged in, however, the preamp does its magic and the guitar comes alive. I must also add that shallow bowl Ovations are much more comfortable to play than its mid or deep bowl brothers. I used to own an 1861 standard balladeer. It had served me well, and was quite happy with the three-year partnership that I had with it.
I can't tell you much about the elites, for I prefer Ovations with the center sound hole, as opposed to the multiple ones accompanied with the fancy epaulets. Just IMO. |

Location: Minden, Nebraska | Both have shallow bowls. I think the Custom Balladeer 1862 was higher up in the Ovation taxonomy in its day than the Elite Special S868 was when introduced. I believe the stock pickup and preamp system on the 1862 was FET3, which would most likely make whatever was stock on the S868 an electronic upgrade. The Elite Special should, in theory, sound better plugged in.
My question to Elitespecial is this: which do YOU think sounds better, since you have them both? |
