I just won the auction for this beauty!

I was expecting some sniper action at the close of the auction, but happily, no one took a run at her.

She'll be making a trip directly to the mothership for a complete check-up.

1537

Does anyone know the proper procedure for sending a guitar back for work? Do I need a work order# or something?

Happy as a clam!

Yes, you need to call Kim or John and get an RMA number to send the guitar back. Then they will give you a cost of repair and you say yeah or nay.

Yeah, congratulations, great price. The only thing that concerns me is the seperation he mentions between the top and the bowl. But the factory should be able to handle that.

With the great deal you got on the guitar, spending some money at the factory should be fairly easy. You'd still have a great guitar at a great price.

Very nice, Grif. I have been similarly infatuated with "Marilyn" (see my thread) the past few weeks. Send it off to The Wizards, and then play it enough to warrant another journey!

Thanks everyone.

She's on her way as we speak.

Talked with John B. got the RMA#, and he has the whole wish list in hand.

She should land at the Mothership on Friday.

She's definitely going to be a player not an art installation, even though they are soo good lookin'.

I'm curious about everyone's thoughts about the 1537's top. The discussions lately about 1537's being refurbished with new tops, I am concerned that without the original's reinforced upper bout, the difference in the quality of sound would be significant?

With the unanimous agreement here of the magic of the 1537, I would be very reluctant to have a new top put on.

Congrats Griff, I agree the top and fretboard seem to be the biggest difference in the 1537, and it seems logical to conclude therein lies the magic, hopefully the top can be saved, economically! congrats again...phil

Unless you love the natural tops, I would ask John to quote you on refinishing in a nice tobacco burst.

My tobacco burst was the best sounding 1537 (out of 5) that I owned.

Tuppy will attest to the fact that the sunburst 1537's just seem to sound better.

I think there's alot of people interested in an A/B comparison with Weaser's 1537. I would try and preserve the old top if at all possible. The dents in the binding are something I would be able to live with if that makes a difference in the ability to keep the old top. At the price you paid though, you're bound to have a lot of options open to you on what they could do. Congratulations again!

The dents in the binding add character. It's still way cooler than a plastic binding. I'll bet they can glue the top down and replace the knob. If it's not going to be a wallhanger, you may never want anything more done to it.

Keeping the TOP Would be a Good Idea,Solid Top takes up to TEN YEARS to Reach Full Potential..or buy a taylor and manhandle that one.. ;)

If at all possible, keep the old top (don't see why you wouldn't). The factory is great at refurbishing old tops to make them look new.

I agree...I don't see anything that would make anyone even consider replacing the top on that guitar. Replacing a top on an old guitar solely because of asthetics totally defeats the point of getting a vintage guitar in the first place.

I had a 1969 GC 12 string that had a top that was intact (worn would be a good description), but it sounded like ka-ka. I kept the original neck (a piece of art) and had a whole new body put on with bracing that I liked (A vs. fan). It's not something I would recommend to purists or traditionalists, but in this case, it turned out better then I ever could have hoped.

But in the case of this 1537, I would guess that the top will stay. As it should.....
