Hello,
I just picked up an ovation balladeer, model 1111-4, serial number 4481 (typewriter style numbers, all black). the back is the rough surface (not shiny), and the tuners are kluson deluxe. it has no onboard electronics - someone had put a dearmond 210 on it (thankfully). i'm having trouble figuring out whether this guitar is from 1968 or 1988. any help is much appreciated.

thanks for the help -- im not really sure how to post pictures here, but it looks (and sounds) awesome. in all honesty, i never liked ovations until i played this one. it sounds more like a j-45...huge end, dark, vintage, worn-in.

One word of advice:

They're classy.

Don't expect anything on the first date...

just out of curiosity -- how much do the 60's ovations usually run for...i got mine luckily for a hundred bucks, but i'm assuming that they usally go for a bit more...(i'll email you a pic by the way).

It would have to be at least a '71 or '72 with that number, right? I have '72 GC Artist that has a similar label and serial number.....textured back.

My buddy has a 1111-4 with a textured bowl, Kluson tuners and a winged bridge. Unfortunately the serial number is unreadable. I thought I had narrowed it down to a '70 or '71 but then all the pictures I have seen of those years have the modern shaped bridges. And all the pictures of '68 and '69's seem to have a shiney bowl. So I can only guess that it was made somewhere late '69 or early '70. It's a shame about the label being defaced somewhat, it's otherwise in good condition with no finish cracks. And it's a pretty nice sounding instrument, but no 1537.

Sometime in '69, Ovation went to the textured bowl. In that same time period, or just after, for a year or so, they used the winged bridge. By 1972, they went with the same bridge used today.
