Today I stopped by a local music store, I used to work there a couple of years ago.
anyway this guy comes in with this Ovation Celebrity CS257 acoustic/Electric guitar and he wants to know if we do repairs.
Well I do, do some repairs, so I said "let's see what ya got" he opens the case and it looks at first that the nut is just broken. then I notice the seperation between the neck and body of the guitar. (oh boy!)
So I tell him what all is involved with removing the neck, cleaning out the pocket, regluing the neck (praying it holds), leveling a re-crowining the frets (if needed) basicaly a complete setup after the initial repair. so I tell him "I'll do it for $150.00" but that I can not garrantee that the neck will stay set and true 6 months down the road. anyway he decides he does want to get it fixed, and that the guy that broke offered to cover the cost of repair or new guitar. so he decided he wanted another acoustic instead. he ends up selling me the Ovation with Hardshell case for $30.00 Yup THIRTY Dollars. I figure if I can't fix it to withstand string tension, it will make one cool floor lamp.
So I took the chance and removed the neck, cleaned the pocket up, and applied liberal amounts of quick setting epoxy. now will just wait and see.

The Saga continues...

Well I got it back together, and in my exitement got some epoxy on the front (oh well).
anyway, they did not give you much to work with in the dovetail dept. of the neck joint. I cleaned out the pocket as best I could, and mixed up a batch of Loctite's fast setting epoxy.
I applied liberal amounts of the epoxy and put the neck on, and did my best to hold it in place by hand (hence the fast acting epoxy). a couple hours later I put 5 strings on it, and tuned it to pitch and the epoxy held firm.
Later on that night..early morning, using plastic filings from a bridge pin, and some liquid super glue, I was able to repair the area of the nut that was broken (low E).
I wedged a box cutter blade between the nut and the fretboard just enough to keep the area that needed the repair straight and true.
Holding the guitar in an upright position I then put a nice pile of shavings in the repair area, and added a few drops of super glue.
Using a paper clip, I mixed up the shavings and glue and built up the area.
after getting a nice build up of plastic/glue applied I let it set up (about ten minutes).
I then turned on my soldering iron and set it at 40 watts. using the iron I heated up the razor blade, and I was able to remove the blade with affecting the nut repair. file and shape the repaired area, cut the string slot and she's done.
Ofcourse I had to remove the shims under the bridge because the neck is no longer sitting exactly the way it did from the factory. and it will need to be leveled and crowned. but overall the thing plays remarkably well for what it has been thru.
It's a keeper!
It is odd that all of the info I find online for this guitar says it has a built in tuner and a compensated bridge

After photos...

Now I just have to get it acclamated with the rest of the kids.....

Good story that shows what can be done with simple tools and the right knowledge.

The original version had an OP-24+ preamp, which predates the less expensive preamps with tuners. I believe it also had a straight bridge saddle, too.

Great job on the repairs, Elliot.
You were in need of a roundback!

Way to go ! And Welcome.

what I love about the O's and A's is their sound design and workability. Even the Junkyard Dawgs can outperform and survive some adventures.
