For awhile now I have been thinking about sending that Ovation Celebrity I got for $30.00 and fixed, over to Iraq.
Addressed to any U.S. Marine/Guitar player.
It was my good fortune to get the guitar, even with a detatched neck for $30.00. So I might as well pass on that good fortune to someone who could really use it.
Now the only question is, do I paint the Hardshell case desert camo before I send it, or let them do it when it get's there.

Well bye bye Ovation, you will soon be played by someone more deserving than I.

I was able to get an address to a Marine Unit in Iraq.
The customs forms are filled out, and the guitar is packed and ready to go.
now I am off to the Post Office.

Since I no longer own an Ovation, can I still pop in and say howdy?

Elliot - that's awesome! As far as I'm concerned - you're always welcome!

Elliot. Great story, I'm sure some Marine will be very grateful. You should ask them to check in here and tell us how they like the guitar.

It's called the "Ovation Fan Club", not "Owners Club". Anyway, I'm sure you won't last too long before the "O Gases" build up again.

Hat's off to you Elliot.

That's a wonderful gesture Elliot. I'm sure it will be appreciated when it arrives.

I can't speak for anyone else but it's ok with me if you drop in to say howdy...or g'day :)

Nice gesture, Elliot. Is it going to anybody in particular, or just to any old unit and hoping one of 'em can play guitar???

Nrce thing to do, Elliot but I hope you packed it in a shipping box. I wouldn't trust couriers to get it to the other side of town, let alone a conflict zone, in just the case!

By a stroke of coincedence, the guitar is going to a Marine Unit in Iraq who's guitar was stolen out of their chappel.

Bluebird,
If they guitar can't survive in the hardshell case, I doubt a cardboard box would make much difference.
It is going VIA USPS so they should be alitle easier on it. :D

Elliot - you may have alreday done this, but make sure that whatever is in the storage compartment inside the case is secure. I've had a couple of guitars shipped to me where keys and allen wrenches were loose in the case and bouncing all over the top of the guitar.

Good point Crimson,
There is a set of strings (Martin extra lights)
an assortment of picks.
a Strap
and a string winder.

hopefully nothing that would cause damage during shipping.

I'd also wrap duct tape around the neck of the case. Make certain the strings are loosened and possibly add some padding around the head of the guitar in the case.

You're doing a very very good thinig.....

I shipped my 1868 back to mother with it's busted bridge via UPS in nothing but the case last year, and the case is took a heavy toll. cracks, metal feet driven right inside the case, various other dings and bumps, but the guitar survived without any further damage.

Of course when John sent it back, it came packed in an Ovation box full of styrofoam peanuts. So, the case will take a hell of a beating and still protect the instument inside.

excellent gesture, elliot.
and now that you no longer own an ovation, it is safe to go ahead and give us the "long story" of how you came about your user name. ;)

OK Lanaki,
You asked for it.
My wife and I hang out with my buddy's band.
Well the other guitar player (lovable redneck he is)
made posters for a gig in Ellet Ohio except he spelled it Elliot. a year later I video taped them playing a gig at Clay's Park at the Melody Barn. well when I finshed the DVD, I did not realize I had mispelled Melody as Meldoy. So to rib me for a awhile they called me Meldoy. then when the band started getting more and more of a following, the new people heard them calling me Meldoy.
So you take two typoes and that's how I became Elliot Meldoy.
:)

Wonderful thing for you to do Elliot! However I VERY STRONGLY suggest you put it in a box as well as taking all the other precautions that have been mentioned (bubble wrap the head, loosen the strings, make sure nothing can get loose & bang around in there, etc.) Maybe you could go to a music store & tell them what you're doing & ask for a used guitar box. I would also use any type of shipping beside United Parcel Smashers if possible. Those bozos could destroy a damned bowling ball. I will never use them again. Ever. They got me three times, that's enough. Again, this is a great thing for you to do & I hope you keep coming here regularly. Good for you!

Good for you!... I was at Houston Hobby airport yesterday and a bunch of army guys were walking down the concourse to their gate and the whole concourse stood up and applauded... It was soo sincere.... Way too cool.

Elliot, see if you can get an e-mail addy for someone at the Marine location you're sending it to. I'd love to see some of the guys post here about who's playing it and what songs are being played... Maybe they'd even send us a couple of pictures too!
