The original Lyrachord was basically fiberglass. Nowadays, the GS bowls have teeny glass beads inside to lessen weight. But if you find the definitive answer, please share it with us. :D

Lyrachord was concocted by a Group of retired Elven Archers working with unhirable Goblin Alchemists and mostly to confuse the Dwarven Pyrotechnics! It was the name given to the Fibrous Resin material used in the injection mold process that followed the Hand-laid Fiberglass Bowls. There are likely several mods to the original recipe along the way but in each case the properties for weight, strength and sonic reflection were spec'd out.

According to Glen Campbell, pictured with his Ovation on the cover of Guitar Player Magazine #2,(which I actually had in my possession in my 2nd year of high school,c.1970 and yes, I gave it away?!), he was told by Charlie Kaman that Lyrachord was made from, "leftover helicopter blades and nose-cone stew." That was when my first symptoms of Ovation Guitar Fever began, and "G.A.S." set in very shortly after that. As soon as I saw the guitar on the cover, I said the words which confirm you have definitely caught the thing,"Igottagetmewonnathose!" I have been saying it ever since. (Ovation Story#3) There is a similar story in Walter Carters' book. I have got to get that book back from my nephew! God Bless You, Mike Seguin

MWoodys theory about elves, goblins and dwarves seems to be the most reasonable to me (i'm into fantasy) and thus will be my answer to those who ask about this strange guitarback ;) This or something like "hardened unicorn blood shaped through the mighty smithing hammer of the old gods"... :D

Specifically the CFC? I've had that damn flyer for 40+ years and never even noticed that it was not a standard bowl.
