What is the material used on Ovations for the Nut & Saddle? Is it plastic/tusq/bone or something else? I'm certain the nut & saddle material on the Applause's that I owned were made of plastic. It may be different for different models but that info isn't advertised very much...
thanks in advance for any news on this subject.
later...

The nuts on Adamas and higher end USA Ovations are bone. The synthetic nuts on USA guitars are made from a polymer called Delrin (also know as Celcon)

"Hope your move went well." +1

And, to take this question a step further, would the average player hear a noticable difference in replacing the Delrin nut with a bone nut?

True, However you would probably hear a bone saddle more. Harder material passes more vibrations to and through the top. The nut only works when it's an open string. Bone tends to wear better over the years whereas the Delrin and get cut down from the strings sawing them over the years. Unless you use the special Nut adapted string tubes.

Is there a factory replacement bone or tusq saddle? The daughter's Elite T saddle is getting groovy. It's been a while since I've looked at it, but isn't the pickup glued to the bottom of the saddle?

There are handmade bone and ceramic saddles for the Ovation pickup but they are not cheap, and whether the very slight improvement in tone is worth the extra dough is debateable. On the older pickups you can just peel off the plastic saddle molding and sit a new one on the silicone. Not sure about the latest versions.

Replacement Ovation nut:
TUSQ PQ-6114-00
I saw it on E-bay...

The Ovation saddle that I've being working with, seems a bit non-standard?
length - width - height
2 3/4" x 9/32" x TBD

compensated bridge at both E strings

a replacement saddle may require using a Bone/Tusq Blank and going from there.
later...

How about fossilized ivory? Probably too expensive for a slight improvement?....

The main factors in nut and saddle materials are weight, density and hardness. Materials that are light and dense sound best. Bone and ivory are ideal but the difference between bone and ivory in terms of density is hardly worth considering, given that bone is a whole lot cheaper and easier to get hold of.
