Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Something seems not right here to me: I noticed that in the reference section of the OFC under serial numbers (6 digit) the numbers are sequential until you get to 1990 to 1992:400001 thru 446000 are not in sequence for the 1990 to 1992 years...This doesn't make sense to me as all of the preceding years are in sequence and also those after the first numbers for 1992; the 2nd 1992 listing picks back up with the sequential serial numbers again...Any idea why this is (could it be a misprint?) I have several 1990 to 1992 guitars that fall in this serial number range and I am not sure if I have the right years posted for each of them...
Anyone else notice this?

Location: NJ | All of the serial numbers are kept in a box of 3x5 index cards.
On Friday, March 3, 1990 . . . somebody dropped the box. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Mike, did you get my email (or PM., I forget) on this over the weekend? Didn't want you to think I ignored you ...
Personal opinion, guess, hunch ... Serial numbers aren't real high on the list of priorities for the factory. One worker once told me "Consider yourself lucky you even GET a serial number. We concentrate on just building the guitars." Of course things are different today with factory barcoded systems, parts management, etc. My GUESS is that these serial number labels came on big rolls of sequentially numbered stickers and somebody grabbed the wrong "next" roll. They noticed it when it was too late and said "WTF, might as well finish off this roll we already started." Just a guess, but I could definately see that happening. If it bothers you, I'd remove the sticker and forget all about what year you might think the guitar was made.

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Thanks Guys, for the help...I really had no idea but thought it was a bit weird (of course go figure Gibson's "system"...and Dave, no problem, I knew you were busy with your slothead so I thought I'd post the question. My 1868-6 is definatly older than the serial number puts it at...it is an early one (probably late 80's or 90 without the access cover for the battery. But according to the numbering system its a '91...oh well...after this it almost makes we wish for a cool one myself...(Cliff, have one for me?)...Thanks Dave and everyone!

Location: CT | The serial number on my 1619 puts it in the '85-'86 bracket on the list. I have a pic of myself (somewhere) playing it in HS in '83. I graduated in '84, so it was definitely made before 85-6. |
