I've been offered this ovation for £200, its around 15 years old, comes with a hard case. The only catch is that it has a crack thats 0.5cm at the soundhole.

However if I pick the guitar up this sunday I might be able to give the guy £150 cash!

This guy doesnt know much about the guitar as his dad handed it down to him, from this picture alone could you guys recommend that I buy it if the crack is repairable, the neck is straight and it plays ok?

In my uninformed opinion, minor cracks do nothing to effect the sound or lifespan of and Ovation.

My O's look like they've been 'rode hard and put away wet' but still play sweet to my ears.
.....'course, I DO have this reoccurring ringing in my ears that I credited to great O sustain for years.

Luckily there's a fairly decent guitar shop nearby that have restored a couple of mine in the past so Im fairly confident they can ensure the crack doesnt spread.

I think I just wanted a 2nd opinion from you guys that have experience with ovations whether or not I should grab this for £150

as uneducated as I am at the euro vs dollar thing, I would say that guitar should go for between 250 and 400.00 US depending on the crack, fret wear, etc.

$250 - $400 is about £125 - £200 at the min so I'll keep that in mind, I'll check for fret wear.

I guess the only real bonus is I get a decent case included! lol

Thanks for the advice

You should be able to look or feel in the soundhole to see if it goes through the wood. If so, you might need some repair. Most cracks are finish cracks, which affect nothing except the appearance.

It's a no brainer, just buy it. If you don't want it send me the guy's email and I'll have it.

As Paul says, it is a no brainer for the UK. Buy it now. Even at £200, it is a good deal.

Well I picked up the guitar yesterday, I was told its around 15 years old and Im pretty sure in that time the strings had never been changed!

I tried to restring it as soon as I got home, although when I got to the high E, the string rested on the fretboard when trying to tune it. The bridge seems to sit that last string way too low and in all its fairly worn and needs replacing, and as Im no expert I think Im gonna have to take it for a professional set up.

So my first experience of playin my ovation legend hasn't really happened yet, really disappointing because the guitar looks amazing...just lacks 6 strings at the min! lol

It also needs a good clean too, there are a couple of sticky patches I cant polish out, do you guys have any tips on how I should clean it? Sounds a bit stupid but I dont wanna cause any further damamge!

If anybody this side of the pond wants a shallow bowl black Custom Legend in mint condition email me. Otherwise it goes on the bay in September after the vacation season is over.

Here we have some stuff called "GOOF-OFF". (Really, that's what it's called.) We have rentals & this stuff cleans off stickers the kids put on everything & all sorts of other sticky messes, even dried latex paint, but it doesn't seem to have any effect at all on finished wood. I don't know what you have there, maybe go to your version of Home Depot & ask.
