I played a gig for our local Arts Council yesterday morning. It was supposed to be outdoors, but rain threatened so it was moved to an indoor location. A PA and soundman were to be provided.
For some reason the soundman went home before I got there. I was asked to "Go ahead and set up your sound system over there, and....."
"Ummm... I don't HAVE a sound system. YOU were supposed to provide me with one".
So they call the sound guy back out. I also asked him to bring along an extra instrument cable since mine proved to be faulty.
It was just myself singing and playing. No band, and one vocal mike. Well, the sound guy forgot to bring an instrument cable and suggested that we mike the guitar.
The guitar in question was my Celebrity CS257. Good enough for plugging in - but not for miking up. Otherwise I would've brought my Legend.
Well, we did it anyway, and I played for an hour and a half like that. I did a performance of traditional Blues music, and the crowd just loved it. I got paid, had fun, and I got a big ol' blister on my finger from fingerpicking too hard.
The morale of the story? Don't be a whiner. Just up and do it! But, the next time I WILL be throwing my Legend in the trunk just 'cuz ya NEVER know. |

Location: South of most, North of few | Kewl beans, just don't let the Legend sit in the trunk too long in the heat, or it might be making a trip to the factory. Or....sell them both and buy an Adamas, then you won't have to worry about having the right guitar anytime. ;) |

Location: Yucaipa, California | ...yup. WHENEVER I play out, I take my own setup- even if i don't use it, at least I'm covered.
I also run the PA at Church and am amazed at how often the "guest performers" who arrive at the last minute,and expect us to provide everything they need, or ask if I have a guitar stand and a cord they can use.... bring you own stuff! |

Location: NJ | 99.999% of the gigs we do requires us to bring/run our own sound system.
A few weeks ago, we played a small place in NorthJersey called Krogh’s.
Over the years, this place has seen the likes of David Bromberg, Richie Havens, Roger McGuinn, the Strawbs, and has it’s own built-in house system.
(basically, it’s a closet near the bar that the contains a mixing board, power amps, and the like).
The in-house sound man opens the louvered door, powers everything up, and takes it from there.
The place is very old “lake-style” architecture (being on a private lake). Low ceilings, log columns/crossbeams, - very “rustic”.
What they did RIGHT was have Bose speakers/monitors mounted inconspicuously to the crossbeams throughout the room.
When we started setting-up, the sound man came out of the kitchen with an armful of mic stands.
When I told him that we had that (and pretty much everything ELSE “covered”) he was estatic.
We were amazed by his stories of people who were booked there and walked in without even bringing a guitar cord with them.
He then asked if we could move our guitar cases “for a second”.
When we did, he came out with a really NICE, comfortable Persian rug for us to stand on. I was amazed!
Basically, we just set-up, plugged into the box on the wall behind us, and we were good to go.
By the second song, he had the FOH/monitors set perfectly . . .
Man! . . . I wish that ALL of our gigs we that easy!!!! |

Location: Copenhagen Denmark | Things certainly are different in the USA compared to here,all the people I know,have Mic.s & cables & instruments,most make a point of having "the best",I got a little cheap leather suitcase for cables only,yet,all the clubs/coffee bars have Soundsystem,Mics,stands and cables and a bit of lighting,..what happened to SERVICE in the USA,is n`t that what America was famous for ?

Location: Hicksville, NY | Thank you for sharing your story tragocaster. Somehow, your experience made me want to pick my guitar and play again (to which I did), and actually enjoyed every minute of it. Hopefully, I'm getting out of this slump that I'd been having lately... |
