My brother has a Cedar/Mahogany fretless that has a TON of acoustic tone and great amped sound. Here's one that ended on the bay recently: Tacoma CB10C

It has a remarkable sound and it is really fun to play because of the great tone and its playability. There is also a 5 stringed version of it if you want to play chords. //Strepin

Second choice, would be the tacoma. (I suppose, if I were not an ovationista, I'd reverse the choice.) Third, the tak (though I've never played one, or seen one being played out, so this would be a distant third.) If I were starting a bass collection, I'd get the acoustic first, then a fender p-bass, then a carvin 5 string with all the bells and whisltles and electronics. Enjoy.

I spent hours reading spec sheets, articles and user reviews. I was already playing a nice Celebrity Deluxe, but I wanted to know if there was something louder out there unplugged (besides a stand up). I really wanted Kim Keller's single-side-holed Blue Adamas, but that was not up for sale. After reading the reviews on the Tacoma Thunderchief, I was convinced that it was what I was looking for. When I got it, I played face-to-face with my Celebrity (switching off with a friend), and the Tacoma was just a BIG let down. It was huge, but didn't sound larger. As a matter-of-fact, the Celebrity was louder, played MUCH easier, and sounded superior plugged in and unplugged. (that was the opinion of everyone else that was there also) Needless to say, I sent the Tacoma back for a refund. I then spent the time waiting for a good deal on an Elite Bass, as I knew that would be the only possible upgrade for me. You can check out the pics of mine on my Album. I WAS looking hard at Randy's (A.K.A. Northcountry), but at the time it was more than I could afford. He has since dropped the price and if I were still looking (and if it is still for sale), I would snatch it up in a heartbeat. It is a one-of-a-kind with bear-claw top, 5-strings, and a custom bridge. A beautiful instrument. I know it sounds like I'm selling it for him, but that's only because I think it is a very nice instrument and would like to see someone else in the club get it before he lets it slip out of the network.

Joined: December 2004 Posts: 1116 Location: Keller, TX | Thanks. I think the Ovation will probably be a little out of my price range. I am looking for a beginner's bass. Although the Elite bass would be nice, it is a little expensive for me (based on his previous price). I have just been too swamped at work/home. I finally headed out to GC last night, but by the time I got out of the mall they were closed. I may run out there tomorrow. I'll keep you informed.

Joined: March 2006 Posts: 1634 Location: Chehalis, Washington | I just about bought one of those ebay Appause bass deals a while back...never quite bit the bullet on that one. I nearly bought one of the Tacoma's last week - beautiful custom all-mahogany fretless, with inlaid rosewood fret markers on an ebony fb, fishman B-band pickup system. Sold for only $850 or so...someone got a heck of a deal.
