Can anybody recommend a headphone amp for practice? I'll be carrying an electric guitar with me to practice during downtime in hotels. The reviews on Musiciansfriend are quite mixed for all the different units so it's hard to really figure out what's what.

I've got headphones already, so the quality of the headphones that come with the amp doesn't matter.

What you want is a vintage, hardly used Ibanez Rock 'n Play with built in effects and cassette player. The outstanding feature of this unit is that I'll send it to you free. Email me your address. It might take me a few days to find it. You can see one like it here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250121908958

Look on eBay and grab an old Rockman. Those things were great! Especially if you like that classic Tom Scholz tone.

The Danelectro E15 eStudio headphone amp is a fun little headphone-only amp to noodle on. Very basic. Sold mine with an old Epi otherwise I'd give it to you.

I remember reading somewhere that Ovation used to make a headphone amp. Am I right?

I'll 2nd the Rockman X-100 recommendation. Portable, really really nice sound. When I was writing tunes I started out by noodling on a Rockman. The signal is so fat that just about anything you play sounds good. Great tool for learning tunes too to play along with. Just plug the output into the Rockman line in, and you can play along with other music and it sounds somewhat "in the same space". Just a fun easy tool.

Favorite part of using a Rockman with an Ovation Acoustic (or electric) is no real controls or settings. Just two self-explanatory switches, not even a volume control. Well there is a set it and forget it input level on it, but in reality, A Rockman is one of the few truly plug'n play gizmos out there.

Try out the Korg PX4D.
It's a 'swiss army knife'.
It even comes with a clip to secure it to your strap.

Rockman's are great; I've got an original from 1983-4; an old Zoom 9000 is great too but a bit bulky...there are a dozen for sale on the bay right now for .99 each and shipping...

I've thought about this as well and finally concluded that just about any small multi unit would work. If you don't need the absolute smallest micro size on the market, the older Digitech RP models sound reasonably well, contain lots of effects, rhythms tracks, etc., and are readily available for the price about dinner for two.

Wow, Brad, I had forgotten about those: floor units I think weren't they? They did sound pretty good as I recall.

I have a Pandora PX4 which travels with me all over. Lots of different amp and cab choices, lots of effects, and very small. Or just use the many presets. The strap clip is really handy. The best feature is the onboard rhythm with bass line ... set that up and just riff to it. I like the blues setting and the surf setting.

I like either the Pandora or the Pocket pod.
