Location: Pewaukee, WI | Picked up a K1111-4. Paper label, B580, five point bridge, Kluson Deluxe safety-post tunes (look very shiny, might be reissues?). Came with the original case. Someone had installed a passive piezo under the saddle (in working condition).
Action is a little high at the sound hole (sinking fretboard maybe, but not much). Dates to Nov 68 - Feb 69. One finish crack behind the bridge, but barely noticeable. |

Location: When?? | Now that's just some heart-happy stuff, there, Randy. Congratulations on a very nice acquisition!! Appears quite clean and pretty. Being a forerunner during the shiny-to-textured transition makes it extra cool. I remember that switch at the very dawn of my early-teen Ovation-lore. Like Seesquare, my DB is also an "A" series (#042), born in the summer of '68 (but not a Campbell like his). so yours was wood on the front of the shelf right as ours were headed out the back door. What is the brace pattern on it?

Location: Phoenix AZ | Transition to textured bowls started somewhere late in the B-xxx series. Seemed to vary by model and by what I can deduce from serial numbers I would say that Balladeers transitioned earlier in the B's and the Josh White, Glen Campbell and 12 strings transitioned later. I think the latest original shiny bowl I've seen was B-5xx (Josh White). |

Location: Pewaukee, WI | I'll take a look at the bracing. Did the K1111 transition to Custom Balladeer then to Legend? I'm only guessing that due to the inlays on the neck. My first ovation (bought new) was about a 1978 1111-1, so just dot inlays. It's gone now but I have a '78 Artist bowl in burst to remind me of it. |

Location: SoCal | Beautiful and interesting guitar. Congrats on the purchase. A K1111 is an early Balladeer and eventually became the 1111, also the Balladeer. Your guitar has the fretboard of a Deluxe Balladeer (K1117) which eventually morphed in the Legend (1117). The headstock and tuners say "Balladeer" (the DB had Grover tuners) and a stencil on the headstock that said "Deluxe". If inlaid, the rosette is that from a DB (the Balladeer had a simplier inlaid rosette). If it's overlaid, the it could be a replaicement reosette. By 1969-70, both guitars uxed the same one.
If it play and sounds great, then be happy. It's a one of a kind...........

That's what I am supposing, too. My '68 has a bit of sinkage similar to what Randy describes. There is a tiny bit of brace separation at the very tip of the upper treble bout. Nothing too major, and when I first took delivery from Dave a little over a year ago it was in good shape, but the poor thing had its own struggle with "climate change" between there and here, so I have let it fully acclimate to the seasons before making any move at repairing the brace tip. The whole time still playing smooth and light and sounding fantastically rich.
