I'm just curious what the advantage is to playing a 12 string.

And when playing it, when reading music, do you strike the 2 strings for each one note (either the 2 that are in unison or the 2 that are an octave apart)? I hope I worded that clearly enough, don't know how to word it well..........

Downwards to play Chords ,it has a Very Nice "Chimey" sound ,Upwards to play Lead ..when being alone on a tropical island it would be a good choice, next to the Ice-cream machine and the coffee maker...gauge 10 - 47 recommended.. :)

There is no advantage. They just sound different. A solo rhythm guitar strummer will get a 'bigger' sound out of a 12 string, but there's a lot of stuff you can do on a 6-string that is just too difficult to do - or doesn't sound right on a 12. Different guitars for different circumstances.

Since TraderJim has good experiences with Silk & Steel strings on an Ovation Solid Top,perhaps a set of S&S strings might be worth checking out,a 12 string can be a "tough" opponent to wrestle with.. :)

Mattel would have to find someone else to paint our kids' toys with lead paint?

Personally, I have found that certain chords, and certain songs, just don't sound right.
I just tried the "Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag" by Country Joe... Not happenin'
It just don't sound right on a 12.
"Lucky Man", "Nights in White Satin", "After The Good Rush", Yeah.
"Rockin' In The Free World", Naw...
