Joined: February 2024 Posts: 10 | hi everyone I would like to buy an Ovation acoustic guitar but there are many models and it is difficult to choose. A new guitar may not sound like a vintage guitar, conversely a used guitar may be defective. At the moment I have a budget of about $1400 and I have seen two models, one new used, in your opinion which one should I buy? I put the links below. https://www.tomassone.it/ita/ovation-elite-2078ax-deep-contour-cutaw... https://piazzostrumenti.it/chitarre-acustiche-usate/89072-ovation-us...

They were solid top, not laminate, and had a high level of quality. The Celebrity, Applause, and the Matrix (not 100%) were made in Asia. They represent a lower price point and thus not as high end materials or workmanship. Excellent value but not a USA made solid top Ovation. Then around the year 2001 they introduced the Ovation LX series guitars. Made in the USA, and the kidney shaped preamp. Older guitars had the rectangular preamp or even just one or two knobs. The LX are excellent instruments, and if you are looking to play plugged in then I would look for an LX guitar. So far, so good. All of those Ovation branded guitars were excellent. The deepest bowl models have a deeper sound, the mid depth bowl is about the same tone as a typical wood box guitar, and the thin body are not very full sounding except when plugged in. In around 2005 they introduced the Deep Contour body. It is deep, with the back being shaped so it is similar to a flat backed wooden guitar. It sounds pretty much the same as the regular Deep bowl. The advantage is it doesn't try to roll face-up when you play it. Then about 12 years ago they expanded production in Asia to the Ovation branded instruments. Prior to that you could rely on if the headstock said Ovation it was USA built, and if it said Celebrity or Applause it was Asian made. Now they came out with Ovation branded guitars with slightly different model numbers. For example, a 6777LX is a USA made LX era guitar. A 6777AX is Asian made and is similar to the LX but with some potentially substantive differences. Anything with an AX is Asian made. My opinion is to look for either a new LX USA made instrument (which will be relatively expensive), or a used USA made Ovation. If you plan to play plugged in, the LX models will have better preamps. Older USA made Ovations will be less expensive and can be superb instruments if in good condition.
