Joined: September 2007 Posts: 3 | New user just checking in and saying "hello". Just bought a "lowly" Celebrity Deluxe, but I love it! I've played guitar for almost 20 years. Then I decided to switch to bass about a year and a half ago. Playing bass was fun and it was definitely a learning experience. Then, a couple weeks ago, I realised that I'm still a guitar player first and foremost. But I didn't want to play electric anymore. I wanted to be able to play whenever I wanted, and because of that (and a lot of music I've been listening to recently), I decided to sell the bass (Fender AmStd Jazz). I got a $400 trade-in value on it (which was great, because I bought it brand-new for $800, since it was a discontinued color!) I originally got an Ibanez Exotic Wood series acoustic. It looked great (quilted mahogany) and the pickup sounded good, but acoustically, it didn't do anything for me. So I took it back after a few days and found a Celebrity Deluxe (in piano black, of course!) that sounded great unplugged! The salesperson was happy to swap it for me, and I've been happy ever since! Granted, it's got a bit of piezo quack to it, but I expected that and it's nothing that I can't get rid of. I was trying to find something that wasn't made in China, but I still played everything in the room (well, in my price range, anyway.) Still, I kept going back to that Ovation, and decided that that was the one that was coming home with me. Strung up with DR RARE phosphor bronze's, she sounds great. I took the shims out from under the bridge and did a bit of polishing on the nut and saddle with MicroMesh papers, and she plays perfectly (still considering a Tusq saddle at some point, but she sounds great right now!) Wasn't too impressed with the internal glueing job on the bracing and kerfing (lots of excess glue), but the guitar sounds really good, and given that it's got epaulets instead of a center soundhole, I'm not concerned. Acoustically, it sounds pretty much perfect to me. Plugged in, the pickup is a bit quacky, but I can work around that (wouldn't mind having a B-Band UST and preamp at some point, but it's not a big deal...maybe I'll just get a D-Tar Mama Bear instead.) Even with it's faults (and even the most expensive guitars have theirs!), I still love it and couldn't be happier! I should say that about twelve years ago, I had a basic Celebrity, and Ovation (and guitars in general) have come a long way since then! -mwd

Glad to hear that you enjoy your new guitar and have found ways to get it to where you like it. I might suggest that you cruise eBay's Ovations for sale on a regular basis: some great bargains can be found for a USA made Ovation. In the meantime, browse around the site and again, welcome to the club!

Some of us struggle to choose which one we prefer over the others. Is that akin to what it was like having a harem?

And yeah, I love DR's. I started using them when I played bass and fell in love with them. The RARE's sound really good, but I want to try a set of the Zebra's, since they're formulated for use with piezo-equipped guitars. At least I can afford to experiment with strings again, unlike when I played bass and was paying over $20 a set!
