Joined: May 2002 Posts: 651 Location: Australia | I'm trying to buy a s/h Ovation from a guy in the USA to ship to me here in Australia. We agreed on the price of the guitar but when he's gone to ship it (not sure with who) they told him it would be over $1000 which is ridiculous. I have bought quite a few guitars from the US and while rates vary it's not even in this universe. Can any of you US based OFC'ers give me some advice I can pass onto this guy on a viable shipping method. Thanks Edited by richardd 2020-09-21 9:25 PM

The caveats when I used it it took a month to get down under, tracking is screwy because USPS handles the US side and fedex does the international part but everybody else is really expensive. https://www.usps.com/international/gxg.htm#:~:text=Global%20Express%...(GXG,with%20a%20money%2Dback%20guarantee.

Shipping costs are calculated mostly by the size and secondly by the weight. A large light box will cost more to ship than a small heavy box. For example, a 46" x 22" x 7" box that weighs 25 lbs. shipped from the US to Oz will cost: USPS - GXG Intl: $443.50 + insurance. UPS Worldwide Expedited (Perth): $913.21 UPS Worldwide Expedited (Sydney): $908.51 FedEx: $963.70 My advice is to request the guitar be shipped via USPS. Keep in mind that the box size will be limited to 108". (length + girth) To calculate shipping size, take the length (46" ) and add girth. (22" x 2 = 44", 7" x 2 = 14" ) So, 46" + 44" + 14" = 104" Edited by DanSavage 2020-09-22 12:58 PM

The older slightly shorter cases used to come in a 1/4 inch under the 108 limit - turn it diagonal in the box...don't think that works anymore....but it did last time I sent a 12 fret 12 stringer to Old Man Arthur in Portland.

My next option was to send it to someone in the USA who could forward it to me. Oh well my search for a blue Adamas continues

The guitar in question was a really nice 1997 Adamas 2 but I had a 30th anniversary 1687 that a had to sell to cover school fees a fee years ago and if could find one at a fair price I'd be very interested.

I've given it the setup of it's life and it's magnificent! All's well that ends well.

I've almost always owned a blue 1687 and this 1681 isn't as fancy as the 1687. It is in fact a FRG but after my setup it plays like a dream and I love it. Thanks for your kind wishes my friend Edited by richardd 2020-10-07 6:26 AM
