Sorry Jeff.....I have been studying non-stop for my RIA and ChFEBC designations and my brain has literally turned to mush!

Anyway....the concert was awesome (as you would expect)! The Gothic is an old 50s/60s theater house with a balcony that covers the back third of the venue and with side balconies running all the way to the front where the stage is. The lower level has about the front third area open for people who want to stand and the back middle/third is tiered with tables and chairs....very nice layout and the place maxes out at 325 people.....so the show obviously sold out.

He started out electric with a 4 piece band...bass, drums, and a multi-instrumentalist who played everything known to man (while also singing incredible harmonies). This lasted about 45 minutes...then the band left and he proceeded to play acoustically alone for about 30 minutes before the full band returned for another 45 minutes.

After 2 hours of non-stop blistering music, he left the stage for all of 2 minutes before the band returned and played at least a 30 minute encore (maybe more but I had to leave because I had my ChFEBC test the next morning at 8:00).

My impressions...I stood in the front of the back third of the lower level which placed me probably 100-120 feet from the stage. The sound mix was absolutely dead on perfect...vocals, guitars, drums, bass, horns....whatever was playing fit perfectly in the mix. After about the first hour and a half, I started walking around the venue to check it out from other angles. I finally ended up standing in the front of the stage about 6 feet from RT and I was checking out his 2 pedal boards which were both crammed full. While musically, they still sounded terrific, the vocals were difficult to hear so I went back to my prior spot and watched until it was time to leave.

RT is obviously an incredible guitar player but I was a bit surprised by how sloppy his electric lead playing was.....now maybe this was by design because his acoustic playing was dead on perfect.

The thing that I really loved though, (even when I though he was playing a bit sloppy), was how he just oozed emotion and made you feel every note.

Of course he also oozed the same emotion with his acoustic but like I said, his playing was pitch perfect without a single sour note.

My buddy who went with me had never heard of RT and was skeptical but left a believer. I saw him a few days later and he had purchased a few CD's.

Overall one of the best shows of the year (out of the 7-8) I have been to.

I wish I had thought to move around the theater. As I said, the sound wasn't too clear, but it may have been because our seats were too close to the stage and a big bank of speakers. During the second electric set, a few people started dancing in the aisles. I stayed put so I didn't look like one of those old hippies. Some of them looked like they were dancing to a different concert.

Took my ex-wife to a DaveMatthews concert (her idea) at Giant's Stadium once.

Got stuck behind two chicks who INSISTED on standing up and "dancing" from the moment the band first started.

By the fourth song, I politely asked if they wouldn't mind to kindly sit down.
One started to, but the other one (obviously the AlphaCow) refused and goaded her friend to resume, shot me the "F@ckYou Look", and took every opportunity to block my view.

Got up and found an usher who told me that as long as they weren't stnding ON the seats there was nothing they could do. . .
Went back to my seat and just GLARED at these two from my sitting position at every available opportunity.

Finally, AlphaCow turns to me and says "Hey! why don't you just get up and DANCE and enjoy the music??"
I politely informed her that ". . since I paid $85 for my seat, it was my intent to SIT in it, watch, listen, and enjoy the music (even tho it sucked), as opposed to being some "carry-over" from the DeadHeads (even tho' I didn't "get it" the FIRST time), and that while I absoLUTEly enjoy watching a woman's derriere gyrating in front of me, HER big FAT ass looked more like a experiment to test the tensile strength of denim!! . ."

They both left.

You paid $85 to see Dave Matthews???

My God! I hope Tim Reynolds was there to save the day!

It's amazing the things we do, and the bucks we spend to keep our marriages intact...

I once took my late wife to see Hootie and the Blowfish.

I guess 30 years ago we'd have to take the wives to the opera to keep 'em happy. I'm not sure that's any worse than Dave or Hootie.

I told the 7 women behind us at the John Mayer concert that I paid for the tickets to listen to him, not them talking about leg waxing. One of them started to give me some mouth, but they all moved to other seats where they could bother someone else.
The gal dancing at the RT concert was kind enough to move to a side aisle where she didn't block anyone's view. I was just worried that she'd spill the beer on me that she was holding. More humorous than annoying.
I asked a guy to leave the Preston Reed concert when he wouldn't stop talking after the intermission, where he obviously liquored up. He moved, but it didn't help much. I just don't get people who seem to go to a concert to talk. Surely the same people don't talk through a movie.

I have a "name" that particular theatre that involves a racial slur that Jeanette finds HIGHLY offensive (and I find funny as ALL hell) . . .

Has anyone seen one of his all request shows?
He's coming to the SF bay area in December and I'm considering getting a ticket. Sounds kind of cool.

It's rare that he does "All Request"- GO!...

Two things you can be sure... He will play his "most popular" tunes and he will also be playing with only his long time and tightest collaborators....

The last past is for sure, I believe it's solo acoustic.

From his website-
When Richard Thompson returns to the Bay Area in December for three consecutive nights at Montalvo Arts Center, he will perform solo, and he will give his fans free rein when it comes to the set list.
"I think this year we're going to do all three nights as request shows. As you come in, you get a little form and fill in your request, and we pick them at random out of the bucket.
It poses tremendous problems for the artist,
and may afford some amusement and confusion for the audience."
-Richard Thompson

Sounds like a good time.

Although his band is very talented, I could do without the drums and bass in particular. We both liked his acoustic stuff best, so a solo performance sounds like a great time. There were a bunch of requests being yelled from the audience that he didn't honor, so I suspect an all request show would be quite different from his show with his band.
