Hi there - I’m a musician, vocalist, songwriter, recording studio owner, and have been an Ovation guitar owner, starting back in the mid-1970’s. I just today discovered this forum and am looking for information on maintaining, and working on my guitars.

I have a specific question right now regarding the recommended process/procedure for refreshing the finish of a molded Ovation case for a Custom Legend guitar, model 1869. I believe this guitar was sold new in ~1991 and I acquired it later, adding it to my Grand Balladeer (acoustic) purchased new in the 1970’s and to which I added piezo pickups under the bridge 4-5 years ago.

My classic light brown molded case for the Balladeer is in pristine condition inside and out, the exterior is nice and shiny. However, the molded charcoal case for the Custom Legend seems dull, (maybe oxidized a bit?), and also has some minor scuffs and places where it picked up bits of white (maybe paint off of walls, etc) — so I’m hoping to learn the best way (if there is one) to restore this case. I’ve already tried applying an “amp & case cleaner” product from Music Nomad. It cleaned off a tiny amount of grime, but otherwise had no impact on the appearance of the exterior of this guitar case.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Greetings, Jim, and welcome aboard. I have found Mr. Clean Magic Eraser very effective in removing paint from the molded plastic case and oxidation on the aluminum case binding. Hope that helps.

Hey Kevin! — I think I need a tip regarding how to attach photos to a post. Can’t figure it out.

As long as the guitar doesn't have minor scuffs. The case did its job. The case for my 1869 has a broken latch. The other three work, so I'm not worried about it. Cheers and Welcome!
