. . . and it worked!

My group and I did a freebie for a friend's party. It was outside on a deck on the third floor of his house. I wanted to carry as little equipment up there as possible. We usually run two speakers on sticks and one floor monitor. I'd seen a local solo act who just put one speaker behind her slightly above her head, and it seemed to work fine. I figured if I were to try it anywhere, this would be the place.

So I did. Our monitor is actually our beefiest speaker, so I mounted it on a stand behind the middle person in the goup, at about 6 1/2 feet. We run one guitar w/synth, a drum synth, and three voices all through the PA. It worked great. We heard everything we needed, we knew what the audience was hearing and we were not overly loud. I should mention that this was a beach house and we were competing with the breakers. No problem.

Now the question. We have a bar gig in a couple of weeks and again I am tempted, sorely tempted.

Should I?

I think that it depends on the size and noise level in the bar. I would give it a try, but bring your other speakers in case it doesn't work.

You'll have to watch out for the vocal mic(s) feeding back . . .

I say use the bar's pa. Go all acoustic except for the bass.
Mic the bass amp with a shure pg 58 mic. run him into the sound board. Make the drummer stand with his kit like the violent femmes off to the side, should be minimal amount of percussion.

Up in front, the guitars and mandos (and god forbid) the banjo, stand next to a a pair of AT 4033 or similar mic. If you have a keyboard player make him play accordian. This is like the old radio set ups and very popular now in NYC. Make the venue supply the sound man. Run everything into the board. No need for monitors. Other than the bass, no need for you lug around speakers.

I've played some rooftop parties here in Brooklyn, and I've found the Adamas to be plenty loud, and I sing loud anyway, so needing a mic's not an issue, but softsingers, gentle players and zithers definitely need some sound reinforcement. So probably the one speaker would work.

What speaker did you use?

Ooops. Reread your post. Missed that you only had two instrumtents. Still run all vox to the board, and mic the one speaker and run that into the board.

It's a Peavey 112 TLM, and that's essentially the issue. It's a monitor wedge and I'm not sure of the angle of dispersion when it's turned upright, as this isn't covered in the spec sheet.

I think we can get pretty good gain before feedback because we did the other night, but that was outside. I was curious if anyone else had tried this approach in the sonic environmet of a bar.

BTW, there is no house PA, just us and what we bring.
