A guy I became friends with recently has been friends with Billy Joe Shaver for several years. Billy called him and said he scheduled a concert in Dallas, 20 miles from us, sometime next month. My buddy asked me to go along with him, said there'd be no charge for us to get in and we'd be backstage. My friend always introduces me as "a songwriter I know". I'm already in abject terror over the possibility of BJS asking to hear one of my songs. I think it would take huge b**ls to audition a song as a totally unknown songwriter to a legend like Billy Joe. Might have to resort to a hip flask of a combustible beverage to calm my nerves! What would you do?

Don't worry.
Billy Joe puts-on his pants one leg at a time like everyone else.
I am sure that he has heard Lots of bad songs in his life.
Be Proud of your creation.

First, call your attorney. Then, like Arthur said.. take pride in your work no matter who is listening (unless it's Darkbar or me, then maybe take cover). Oh, and bring the flask. With the stack of meds they have you perked with these days the combo effect should make for a real hoot.

He hasn't always been a "legend" himself.
Everyone has to start somewhere.

Relax, believe in yourself and be prepared.

Have video of your "better" songs loaded on a flash drive.
Offer it if asked.

You are allowed to be the gushing fan but remember that he might need something from you such as inspiration and feeling as safe as he does with your friend. Offer him your hospitality.

Arthur - some of us put our pants on two legs at a time, especially when they just came out of the dryer!

Shooting someone? Yes.
Pointing out that was part of BJS's interesting life history? Certainly wasn't intended.

Well he did shoot a man for telling him to shut up...

And after he was acquitted, with Rober Duvall and Willie in the courtroom supporting him, he remarked "maybe me and the guy I shot can put this past us now. We might even become good enough friends I can ask him for my bullet back". I wondered how the guy he shot point blank in the face was able to apologize right after being shot but later learned Billy shot him with a small pocket derringer. Ya know what they say "you can kill someone with a .22 it just takes 'em two weeks to die".

I'm betting he does NOT ask to hear one of your songs

Okay.. but now you still have to find someone who'll take the bet.

And I'm hoping you're right because the thought is terrifying to me. The fact remains that his long time friend I'm going with ALWAYS introduces me to people he knows as "this is Dave, a songwriter I know". I just had a conversation with my friend of over 40 years who is a retired songwriter in Nashville with a stellar resume to his credit. Told him I was worried Billy Joe's immediate, natural response might be "let's hear something then". His comments to me were not to sweat it and that I'd be fine once I got past the first few lines. He added that I had sent him some damn fine songs, most of which I never posted here on the songwriting thread. My favorite quote from him was "we're all bozos on this bus anyway".

I've worked with BJS, Dave. Just be yourself. Probably won't ask for a song... but likely won't shoot you over an offering.
