I am a relatively short time classical owner/player (just an old CC-013 which actually plays quite well). I have been using D'Add EJ 45 tie-ends, but have ordered a set of Martin 260 ball-ends to give a try. Any opinions on this topic? Things I should be aware of in making a switch?

PS Edit-- The reason I want to change is because the white plastic ring string support on the bridge is cracked directly under the low E string and I want to remove pressure from it (ball end will achieve this). If anyone has one of those rings available, please drop me a PM.

I prefer tie ends just for OCD reasons. The good thing is that you can try the ball ends and if you don’t like them just cut off the balls and tie them.

Yeah, me too, that's why I would ultimately like to go back to ties if I can find a replacement part for the bridge.

>>>cut off the balls and tie them<<<

Possibly, but when they did that to our cat and it changed the tone in his meow.

Tie them, and make sure you tuck and wrap the ends

I use ball end strings on my classic guitar because the string angle on the saddle is better with them.

The plan here is because of the crack on the bridge trim, though I will be curious to see the difference on this saddle's setup as well. Instead of the string wrapping over the top of the bridge, the ball ends will just be a simple through-and-through. They will, however, somewhat change the directional tension pull on the overall bridge-to-top connection (glue only), and hopefully with a guitar of this age it won't be enough to cause too much of an abnormal shift on the historical pressure direction it's had its whole life. We shall see.

Huh? I do?

My buddy asked me to help him restring a classical guitar that he has. I didn't know that they made ball end nylon strings until I went to order strings for him so I ordered a couple of sets. I can't see any reason why they wouldn't work well.

Here is a set of instructions I have used to train others for years. The part about the correct position to make the wrap BELOW the corner of the bridge is essential. This is a nice progression of photos.

Elginacres.. good photo example. This is where the plastic is cracked on my bridge. Directly under the low E string. Mine has the full rectangle white piece, and it cracked in that corner as well. Fortunately, I found the piece and put it back with CA. Set in just peachy, but I don't want pressure on it, so the ball ends will eliminate that. I assume this to be a fairly common bridge crack, but I haven't owned many nylon string guitars. I eventually need to find/make a replacement part.
