Does anybody here ever set the tone knob to anything other than max? I can't think of a time I have turned the tone down other than when wondering what it sounds like. EQ is done at the amp or PA, and from there I use the neck pickup for more mellow sounds and the bridge pickup for solos or a brasher rhythm sound.

Besides, the tone controls don't seem to do more than turn the sound to mush.

I'm considering rewiring at least one of my electrics so that each pickup has a volume control. It would be more useful than one master volume and a tone control. Unless there is some good reason not to that you know of.

That's interesting (and should get some interesting response) because others like myself tend to use the tone more than the Volume on my Ovation solid body guitars. I usually leave the volume wide open and setup the amp with the tone at about 3/4 open.

Then for lead riffs I just open up the tone all the way, then back it off for rhythm again.

When I run my Rockman gear, I do use the volume, but it is more to add distortion rather than volume due to the compressor in the Rockman. In this case I set the amp up for volume with the vol control on the guitar a little better than 1/2. Using the tone I can get cleaner sounds or slightly edgy, then punch the tone and vol controls for a big phat lead.

By the way, if you are playing a Breadwinner, Deacon or Preacher Deluxe (the pre-amp'd guitars) the "normal" position for the tone is 50% and it either boosts the highs, or boosts the lows plus/minus from center.

yes
depending on which amp and how it is set, I often roll back the highs when it is way too piercing.
I have a couple of amps with some really shrill speakers and I roll the tone back to mellow out the guitar sound.

I also roll the vol back on occasion too so I can overdrive the amp and keep the vol at a manageable level

Depends on the guitar. On SGs or Les Pauls I rarely used the tone knob (which just bleeds off the highs to ground - and thus the mush). All my electrics now are active, and the tone knob is actually usable, and I can boost or cut highs without the mud.

I back the tone off slightly on the hollow-bodies and when using the bridge pick-ups on solid bodies, which is rarely because I prefer the cleaner and fuller sound of the neck pick-up. Also, I tend to back off the tone on humbuckers more than on single coils. I haven't messed with the VXT long enough to adjust the tone. So far, I've been having too much fun with the acoustic/electric knob and switching between the electric pick-ups.

I use the tone on my Breadwinner because it actually DOES something on that guitar. On any other guitar I can't be bothered because all it is is a treble cut. Waste of time.

For me and my tele, I crank up the tone to get maximum twang. I peel it off to get more mud and hollowness. A lot depends on your pups and your amp.

I used to mess with the tone(s) on my Pseudo-Strat trying to get an acoustic tone...

Then I bought a Balladeer!

[but I do like messing with the pick-up switch]

On Telecasters - yes. I constantly twiddle the tone knob. Volume too. On all other solid bodies, no. I leave the tones on 10, unless I'm playing "Sunshine of Your Love", when I'm on the front pickup with the tone knob off.

That's why I play a Tele. For all of those little tonal variations that you can't get on any other electric guitar.

Have you tried a Viper? Not that it's a Tele, but it's fun to twiddle the pickup selector and volume knob!
