Hi guys. Greetings to all of you. I am new and i have a case to solve for you (if you are interested). I got this Ovation recently and after doing some research, nothing seems to be adding up. I am from Austria by the way. Maybe that helps as well.

My Ovation has these features:

+ Oval sticker in sound hole in black and white (Standard Balladeer 1771) - Made in USA, Kaman
+ Grover tuners
+ Binding on body (4-ply) and neck
+ Dot inlays
+ Preamp only has TONE and GAIN, Sticker on it says Ovation, Standard Balladeer 1771, Kaman, Made in USA (black, gold), rectangle shape
+ Headstock is black with a golden "Ovation". It is not carved at the top like the expensive models. More like an Applause

I could find this model nowhere. If i look up catalogues from that time, i cannot find anything that has this preamp.
Please help with this matter.

Label looks like this?

Does the preamp have "sliders" for a 3-band EQ?
Or just knobs that say Tone and Gain... Or maybe sliders that say Tone and Gain?

Okay... I am confused.
How about a photo?

If you cannot get the "Attach a file after posting" button down below to work....
You can post the photos on any other photo hosting site (photobucket, picassa, facebook) and then just post the address here.
Be sure that the photos are set as "public" on those sites.

That is an Applause. This is an Applause headstock.

And this looks like an Applause binding... especially if it feels like a bump of plastic.

I have no idea is going on with that label on that preamp... But that is an Applause Preamp.

And that label MAY have come from another guitar.

So... I believe that someone put a lot of work into making this look like something else.
So Sorry.

Above the oval label there should be a rectangular label with the Serial Number on it.
If you find that, there should be a six-digit number starting with a "5" for it to be a 1771.

While I was goofing around, you posted a whole photo of your guitar....

Uh... That is not an Ovation Rosette...

Creative engineering.

But the Real Question is... How does it Sound?

Hi Arthur. Thank you. I don't want to sell it and i didn't expect to find an expensive guitar for a cheap bargain. I knew it wasn't a Standard Balladeer. The binding is, as you said, not very well integrated into the body. I knew from the headstock that it is an Applause, but who puts an ovation decal on it and how? Also the preamp is a mystery since it is an applause type but with Kaman USA written on it. Strange.

Since i don't know much about acoustics i can't compare, but it sounds alright. A bit cheap maybe but it needs a setup. Also the strings are old. No square label with a number.

Who would do such a strange thing to a guitar?

Okay... I figured-out what you've got.
That is an Applause Summit series, model AE28. (maybe an AE24 if yours has a deeper bowl)
Yours has been jazzed-up with an aftermarket rosette and some creative printer work.
HERE is one that sold on Reverb.
Do a google search for that model, and imagine a new rosette, new decal and some Grovers and there you go.

I hope that helps...

Ovation Decal
Why? The same reason that kids put Fender/Gibson stickers on their K-mart specials.
And he should have gotten one of These
It looks more like an Ovation rosette.

Hey! I have an ALL PLASTIC (except for the bridge) Applause AA12 with an Aluminum fingerboard.
It has a Urelite and Aluminum neck (no truss rod) and a Lyrachord bowl. It is weatherproof.
I just grabbed it because it has a Plastic Top and Aluminum fingerboard and frets,
and it was only $79.

Arthur. You saved my day. Thanks for the information. The only thing that's still strange to me is the sticker on the preamp. The owner couldn't have made a custom sticker for that. Were there ever any Standard Balladeer models with such a preamp and sticker? It fits like it's original. And thanks again for the info and your time.

Holy crap. Didn't know there was an aftermarket for this stuff. But nowadays you can buy anything. One more thing. How can i find out the year of production?

That is an Asian Applause.
On USA, New Hartford CT Ovations you can go by the serial number.
On Asian Applause and Celebrity guitars it is much harder to guess.
Because it has an Ovation-ish headstock, it is pretty recent.
I think 1990's or later.

Any of you more knowledgeable members can jump-in and correct me when necessary.
