I have a question for you Dan.

I recently scored an Op-Pro preamp, can, pickup and cables off Aussie eBay, and I'm planning to install it in my 1982 Folklore 1614.

I was planning to make a template for the cut-out from one of my other O's. Is that what you did for your 1617?

Hi Paul,

Yep. I took the OP-Pro can out of my 2078, then traced the opening onto Bristol paper.

The trickiest part is knowing where to put the hole on the new guitar. What I did was to hold the can up to the front of the guitar, then looking front to back, move it back and forth until the curve of the can matched the curve of the waist.

Upon further reflection, it would be easy enough to put some masking tape on the side parallel to the top starting at the joint where the neck joins the body and mark the start of the hole, then transfer the tape to the guitar where you want the hole to go. I just eye-balled it, but using the tape would be more precise.

I put some masking tape on the waist, then traced the template onto the tape. I used my Dremel cut-off wheel to rough cut the opening, then used a sanding drum to grind the opening back to it's final shape.

Remember, you can always sand off more material to enlarge the hole, but it's more difficult to shrink the hole if you get it too large.

Dan

Thanks very much Dan.

I'll take the can out of my ADII and use that to make a template, plus I'll do the masking tape thing to get it accurately positioned.

I don't have a Dremel, and I've yet to decide how to cut the hole.

Paul

Paul, years back someone used this trick to place to hole. Get some fast drying modelling clay and use it to mold a template on your ADII after you've removed its pre-amp. Let it dry and then place the template on you older guitar to mark the hole. As Dan said, it's safer to start slightly small and go a little slow.

Have you given any thought on how to fill the battery holder screw-hole as you won't need it anymore.

Thanks Patch.

That sounds like a good tip. And I will progress with this job very slowly. I couldn't live with myself if I damaged my beloved Folklore.

As to the holes from the battery mount and tone/volume knob, I haven't had any ideas other then to try a black rubber blanking grommet. I'm open to suggestions though.

Paul

ps The CE768 you sold me a few years back is going strong. I'm forever grateful to you for letting me have that beauty!

I used to have some photos showing the layout of the template and what to do with the pads on the inside.

It's been done, just don't cut too close, allow for the top thickness.

WRT to the holes from the old electronics, one option, which I elected to do, is to do nothing.

Thanks Woody. I follow you.

Did you cut an inspection/access port in the back of that O in the picture?

I'm considering the do nothing option, and as the back of my Folklore is black I may try the blanking grommets if I can find the right size. If they look bad I can simply remove them.

I have one I could lend you for a little while, but you'd need to make sure you had the right bits for it. I'm not sure that I'd have the ones you'd need.

I used these cut-off wheels to rough out the opening:

https://www.dremel.com/en-us/Accessories/Pages/ProductDetail.aspx?pi...

It fits in this mandrel:

https://www.dremel.com/en-us/Accessories/Pages/ProductDetail.aspx?pi...

I used this sanding drum to enlarge the opening to the final size. I used the 120-grit band:

Pretty sure I have all of those in the kit I bought.

Thanks Dan and Geoff.

I'd like to borrow your Dremel kit Geoff, if that's OK.

Post photos as you go. This looks like an interesting project. I was encouraging my nephew to go this way with my old Legend 1117.

Shall do. It'll be a week or so before I get started.
