Location: USA | I know this is subjective but I need opionons. I have an opportunity to purchase a Dead Mint 1975 Ovation 1114-4 with OHSC (also mint). The offer is $600 cash or $400 plus a misc trade that's worth about $200. I keep seeing values going down on ovations in general. If I purchase it, I am doing so to keep and play but you never know down the road I might want to trade it or sell it. Am I getting a fair deal? I would also love to hear any opinions on this particular model.

I dunno if this helps you or not, but I have sold more than one folklore for much better money than that. I seriously doubt you will find a better guitar for that price, especially if it's in good shape. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I paid a lot less, but mine is worth a lot more. I agree that they are great guitars for fingerstyle playing. If you don't want a guitar with a wider nut than the standard, go for something else. |

Location: Sunshine State, Australia | Buy it. Just be aware that some of the earlier models like mine (1973 I think) had nylon string tuners and may sooner or later need replacing. I had to do yhis with mine and I replaced them with a set of Grovers. As this one that you're interested in is in such good condition, it obviously hasn't been played much fo a 40+ year old guitar, so the tuners may look fine... Until they start to fall apart. Now the tuner issue is NOT a reason to NOT buy it. (Yours may already have steel string tuners) As I mentioned, that guitar is over 40 years old and I'd be willing to bet that it will be the loudest, richest sounding wood-topped acoustic guitar you've ever owned. Buy it. Haggle some, then buy it. It's the only Ovation I own now.

Location: Boise, Idaho | Good point, Muzza. Folklores had nylon-string tuners until 1977, so if this is really a mint 1975, it will have them. It doesn't take much for me to procrastinate when it comes to changing strings, so I'm really bad about it with the Folklore. I don't mean to sound negative. I love my Folklore and to me it has the truest Ovation sound that I also love, even with old stings. (I love very few people and even fewer things, so saying it twice in the same sentence really should mean something.)
(In contrast to Muzza, I still own more than 15 other Ovations and the Folklore is one of my favorites.)

Location: Boise, Idaho | I don't even have any stashed, although I did build a rack for the cases in the attic and a pull down stairs to get to it, and I keep one at the office and in the summer I keep a couple at the attic. So, I'm obsessed with Ovations, but I haven't increased the collection in a long time and I only have about half what OMA has. The last Ovation I bought was an amp. AJ and I are about as far apart as Idaho and Australia. I don't own a Mercedes and I don't care for Shiraz. I can't think of any more excuses. |

Caught me. I thought I had 18, but had to count to make sure. I said "about half" because 18 is more than half of OMA's 34. I try not to know, because my wife always complains about how many I have and she's been low lately. If I know she's wrong, I'd feel compelled to correct her. |

I got the first one to play at our wedding and tried to get a second one for our 25th anniversary, but she didn't fall for that or the Collector's edition for our daughters' birthday guitars, until I actually gave them to our daughters. I guess those are #19 and #20, but who's counting? She doesn't see the symbolism or sentimentality when it comes to guitars. Fortunately, she also doesn't see it for jewelry or fancy clothes, but does when it comes to taking trips. I've managed to work some guitar time into several of those trips. |
