| The lefty 1157 Anniversary arrived Wednesday. It has some cosmetic and playability issues that clearly weren't identified in the photos or description on e-bay (more about that in a moment), but it's a great sounding guitar that I think will be worth restoring and hanging on to. The 1157 is quite a bit lighter than my L717 - I'm wondering if electronics in the L717 would weigh that much, or were the bowls lighter in the early 80's than in the mid-90's? Any experts here want to chime in? Both guitars sound good, but the 1157 definitely has an edge: more clarity and maybe a bit more volume. The issues (on a guitar that was described by the seller as in "excellent condition"): There is a gouge / chunk out of the fingerboard on the 2nd fret under the high E string. Looks like it could have happened when the radical (and less than refined) fret leveling was done... The fret level - especially on the first several frets seems to have been done to remove divots under the E and B strings, and after they were leveled, they were never crowned or polished...and the fret ends are sharp! Running up and down the edge of the fingerboard is dangerous - and even sliding up and down a string (esp. E and B) the rough, uncrowned frets grab your finger. It looks like a beginner practiced doing a fret level on this thing, and then didn't even bother to finish the job by crowing and polishing the frets! More knicks on the top, neck and headstock than mentioned or photographed. Most of these I can live with on a 35 year old guitar, but more transparency in the description and I don't know if I would have been willing to pay the "buy it now" price. As mentioned in my other thread, the guitar was insured for $250 LESS than I paid for it...are there any e-bay rules on that. Over all, I like the guitar - it sounds very good, and someday I'll invest some money in the frets at least (since that issue affects playability). I'll also cut a new nut for this one like my other one and spread out the string spacing a little - old Ovations had narrow nuts! Maybe 1 5/8"? The seller won't get a high rating from me - maybe I can negotiate with him/her a bit on that if it would bother him to get blasted on a few of these things... Gouge on 2nd fret...  Finish cracks on lower bout by strap button...  Very flat, sharp/hard frets with no crown...  Double your pleasure...   | |||
