I can see what you are all saying and understand the reasons for cynicism in light of all that has happened in the past but I still think we need to give Dave a break. He has been apparently dealt a harder deck to play -- you may disagree with the way he has played it. But no one needs to contribute to him if they don't wish to. We are a somewhat privileged bunch -- living in the richest country in the world and we have enough discretionary income to buy these fine guitars as our hobby/passion. I am perhaps a minority of one but that is fine. I have enjoyed the color which he brought to the forum.

Gee (nerdy)Dave, I don't think this rises to the level of a Family Tragedy.

DaveKell - 2015-05-18 6:01 AM

After a lot of thought I've decided to make a conscious decision to quit playing guitar.
I've accomplished everything I wanted to with my playing and it doesn't interest me as much as it used to.

I think that DaveKell is just saying that he is bored with playing guitar, so he is quitting.
When somebody posts something like that... They usually want people to try and talk them out of it.
Kinda like the "Does this dress make me look Fat?" question....
The person asking that question isn't looking for an affirmative answer.
I, and others, said for him to keep it. Beal said "Give it away". And other suggestions.
Just goes to show that this ain't the place to go fishing for compliments.

First of all, you don't KNOW that for certain, unless you're privy to his medical records. Otherwise you're only going by what HE says (and he has said so many conflicting things over the last couple of years that I don't know if he's dying, reborn, pregnant, a quadruple amputee, or just had his tubes tied)
Secondly, don't assume DaveKell has been dealt a "harder deck to play." You don't know what some of us, who choose to be quiet about it, have been dealt.

I'll settle this for you and then maybe the moderators can remove it altogether. I'm not bored, I love playing guitar. I'm not trying to be talked out of it. The issue is I am rapidly forgetting a repertoire I've played for decades. The frustration level is more than I can take and the worry is driving me insane. And trying to learn anything new... well, they might as well beam me into space to the pilots seat of the shuttle with the command to land it perfectly with no training. I admit I have harped waaaay too many times on health issues. I was traumatized by a six month hospitalization with horrible complications from a botched 17th surgery. I was unable to consume a single molecule of food for a year following that. I couldn't watch tv because food commercials drove me insane. I said a long time ago I was a venerated elder on another forum pertaining to my life's work. We all shared a lot about our life on that forum and more friendships flourished there because of it. We truly knew each other. Your suppositions about me and my alleged motives here are entirely off base. I mistakenly misread the culture of this forum and carried my behavior from the other one into here. For that I'm sorry for the intrusion. All I asked in this thread was the possible value of an Ovation I have and the sharks swarmed, revealing more about their personality than mine. SInce I'm forgetting how to play I probably will visit guiytat forums much less, and will most likely only read instead of post. AFter all, what am I going to have to say?

I thought you said the one doctor was found to be a quack, and that the new doctor pronounced you completely healthy? That you got off all your pain meds and are now feeling better than ever?

Someone needs to post a "Best of DaveKell" thread, and produce a timeline of all your various ailments, injuries, diagnosis's, and cures. It's just so hard for us to keep it all straight, as I'm sure it is for you also.

All true. First doc said I could have a stroke at any time. Then tests revealed healthy arteries and heart. My chronic pain spontaneously resolved and I rapidly tapered off of 5 years of morphine treatment. None of that has any bearing on what the human organism is capable of doing to itself on an ongoing basis however. I can't remember songs I've had mastered for decades so what's the use of enduring the frustration? Like I said, on another forum I've been on over ten years we discussed issues like this with each other routinely. This isn't the culture here. How many times must I apologize for the mistake?

From what I understand, MANY people have been the beneficiaries of much generosity on this forum, both monetarily and emotionally. Sometimes, however, credibility is questioned, and the dam get plugged.

Dave, I'm curious about one thing ... you are forgetting how to play guitar which must be some combination of muscle memory, neurological or physical issue and I truly do feel very sorry for you. Yet your ability to type on a keyboard, string together quite well written sentences and recall details of past events seems unimpaired while (I assume) relying on those same/similar muscle memory and neurological abilities. I am no MD, but perhaps this contradiction in symptom manifestation is something you and your doctor should explore more thoroughly. Just a suggestion.

The issue is I am rapidly forgetting a repertoire I've played for decades.
And there I thought that was a normal process of aging. When I was in my teens and twenties I had some 50+ songs memorized that I could play with eyes closed in the dark. Now in my mid 50s I can do about 5 songs that I have most recently practiced and I don't play them from memory but need support of sheets. And I can't even remember what some those 50+ of my youth might have been (well I admit that I also liberally used some enhancing substances in those days, which may affect memory). This does not take away my enjoyment of learning new songs and trying to play those and annoying the odd audience, even if it's just a handful.

At #9  ¿Quién es el más macho, Dave o Gregg?

"Later in the evening, after I had been drinking (& doing other things) with (Greg Allman) all day, I had my wife come up to meet him. Her name is Melissa. He took her hand, held it and said "mmmmmm, Melissa", in a very desirous tone."

...as the night progressed

"Greg talked me out of a denim coat I was wearing that had a colorful embroidered guitar strap sewn onto it as a waistband. Glen's daughter could talk me out of my clothes completely. No comparison."

It's the continued learning of new things that keeps our minds young.

Just like our bodies, if we don't exercise our minds, they will grow old and lose functionality.
