Anyone got a source or supply for replacement of original Breadwinner pots? (Version 'D' board). There's probably a quality substitute out there but I'm yet to find it. Thanks.

I don't know of a source- not sure if anyone has checked with Ovation repair or AlPep- but here's a thread with some ideas on repairing the pots: http://www.ovationfanclub.com/megabbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=32...

Thanks, I will try some of those fixes. I came across a CTS blender that I can 'rat' for parts. The board has had problems over many years, so maybe i should just find a replacement preamp (scarce as). BTW I've had my Breadwinner since 1976.

The biggest problem I've had when working on a couple of preamps is applying too much heat (or for too long); the PCB traces will lift.

I think I've had my Deacon since '74; I'm so old I can't remember. Its preamp is still working OK but I did have a Bartolini preamp in it for a long time so the original preamp hasn't had typical wear.

Are you looking to sell the original preamp?

Not looking to sell the original preamp, it's in the guitar.

I think one of these little boosters might work to keep your guitar going while you're working on the original preamp: http://www.ebay.com/itm/TONE-MONSTER-SG-3D-NITRO-BOOSTER-Guitar-Eff...

Then there's the guy on eBay who believes his loaded pickguard is worth $600: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1974-Ovation-Deacon-LOADED-PICKGUARD-fully-...

Actually I'd sell you one for that price.

i had seen that...He dropped it from $ 650...
brings up a question: what would it take to 'roll your own'? Between etching a PCB, sourcing components, assembly etc it's probably not a viable way to go.

In that light, the Nitro Booster for $ 20 looks good as a stop-gap.

By the way: I have another Breadwinner from parts - it has Eastwood electronics, a PAF neck, and a Super Distortion from '76. Despite the electronics, the thing growls and sings.

Building an exact duplicate would be tough. The original uses an interstage transfomer, an inductor for the mid cut, and some really strange switches. I'm not sure that the original is so great that it's worth duplicating. I'm beginning to think that the best thing to do is to get the original preamp working and then put it aside to preserve it.

I have the Deacon, a couple of white Breadwinners, and a Limited. Got enough parts to make up another BW, except for the backplate.

I agree - I've had the preamp 'fixed' 3 times in the last 10 years - the first guy butchered it further, the second guy scratched his head for 3 months, and the 3rd guy got signal up, but the pots need to be replaced because there's weird volume drops from both.

I couldn't find neck plates, so I made my own - they're unfinished, but true enough.
A simple backplate could be plasma cut, but what would you use for the latching slotted heads. (so that's what they're called!)
Or just keep watching ebay for a year and one will come up.

Could be a Dzus fastener, something like these: http://mlmfast.southcodistributor.com/product/configurators/85.aspx...

Was hesitant to buy a Deacon pre-amp on ebay yesterday - if you look at the photos you can see why. And what are the extra wires (red & green): was another pickup tapped in? or rare stereo version? Anyway it sold for full price, so I'll wait till i see a clean replacement.

Not sure what extra wires you are seeing, but that one looked good to me. 4 pickup leads, ground, 4 battery leads... I think that's it. I'd have to look at one of mine to be sure.
