I have been looking for a travel guitar that would work on some of the mission trips our family is involved with, usually gong to the Phillippines.  So I was really surprised when I found someone selling an Applause AA12 right here in Taiwan!  It seems to be in good shape - even its 'ears' are intact!

However, the previouse owner put nylon strings on it, so it looks and sounds a little goofy.  I searched the archives to find any suggested strings and all I could find was MWoody's suggestion from several years ago to put Silk and Steel strings on it for tone reasons (I think).  Other discussions about Silk and Steel strings say one looses volume and tone with them.  Since its main purpose would be for missions trips with larger groups, the most important functions would be carry-on size, durability, and volume.  I realize that the small size will limit the volume, but it works well with size and durability.

Are the Silk and Steels still the best bet for the AA12 or is there a better combination?  My choices of strings are limited here in Taiwan, but I did find some silk and steels. I have a supply of D'Addario EXP 15 and 16 which I use on my other guitars, but if the volume difference isn't noticeable but the tone difference is I can go with the silk and steels.  Or if there is a better option with better tone and better volume???

In order to make it more flexible, I'd like to add a pickup for when we do have power nearby.  So, does anyone have suggestions on a durable simple pickup solution?  I know, it would have been easier if I had just found an AE12!

Hi Peter...

Silk and Steel strings are good cure for old guitar with high action that needs a neck reset.
They are often recommended for older guitars because they have lighter tension.

Martin Marquis M1400 Silk-n-Steel 11.5-47 = 122lbs.
EXP15 also have lighter tension because they are only 10-47 gauge = 126lbs.
EXP16 are 12-53 = 156lbs.

Silk-n-Steel feel almost like heavy tension nylons.

What they will sound like... Well, you will have to try them on your guitar.

As to a pickup... Without any modifications you can get a suction-cup soundboard transducer.
Like THIS

Using this is quick and dirty solution, but effective.
If you are mostly playing without power, this can be keep in you gig bag for sometime when you have an amp. The cable is only 9 feet or less. But I have used these with a MicroCube and they do work.

Hope that is helpful.
