Hey guys I found a 1968 Balladeer 12 string, shiny bowl, slothead for sale. Its on guitar center dot com but it might have some issues. When i spoke with the salesman yesterday he said it was in great shape but dry and they were humidifying it,I talked to him today and he said the top was sunken,it had a crack that had been repaired and there were other surface cracks on the guitar. He claims the top is stable, the bridge is solidly in place and that it plays great. My concern is that if top has sunk the guitar may have bracing issues.
So the question is would you take a chance and buy a vintage balladeer knowing it could have problems just to lay your hands on an early rare 12 string.

Depends on the price and do you really know what you are getting based upon some GC phone salesman? If was a couple hundred bucks and a 30 day return policy I'd take a swag at it just because they are historic, rare, and sound freaking great (if they are playable).

Go For It!!!

Would they send you pictures? It doesn't take much to email pics anymore, and just a couple minutes of their time. Even though pictures are not proof positive, you may see that it is better/worse than they described.

On my 1619 CL, I had the sales-manager get it in his hands, while I talked to him on the phone. Then I told him that I was big, old, and mean, and he had better tell me every ding, dent and scratch it had. He did a beautiful job describing it, and it really is exactly as he described, and I got it at a really great price!

Pictures Please if you get it!!!

I got pictures and asked lots of questions, the pics were small and low resolution turning grainy when i tried to blow them up but it is a 1968 balladeer 12 string, sometimes they don't know what they have, serial number 0077 i think so I went for it.
It will ship monday,I'm having it sent to my local GC so i can open it in front of there sales staff and if there's any issues i can bring them up on the spot.
They do offer a guarantee so if its not playable i'll ask for a refund,I'll post pics when i get it cross your fingers for me that its as good as they say.
